Supermarkets really are taking the piss now

See what the prices are like in a couple months...I know it is not the same but here I just paid $2 (2000won) for an apple!!

Cannot really blame supermarkets for the end of cheap food, as their way of doing business is partly responsible for making so many things so cheap to start with.

Still it's not so much about who people blame, its whether there is any way to maintain low prices. Im not convinced there is, given the pressures food is under these days.

Im not sure Id go as far as to say its the beginning of the end of cheap everything, but it could be, with obviously dire consequences.

I cannot say I am sorry that people who consume more than they need, wil be forced to cutdown somewhat, or that there will be something of a war on waste, but there are so many people that are only just coping, or not coping, in these 'times of plenty' that I really aint looking forward to the era we seem to have arrived at now.

Even Lidl's taking the fucking piss - 1 litre of UHT skimmed milk up 5p on last week, bread (including the cheapest stuff) up 10-20p, large sack of rice now almost £14 (£2 more than it was last month).

This is just not on.

Thanks for that elbows, are you on a low income yourself?

Times are going to get harder for the western low income population. How long before a food riot in the UK or Europe...I think it is only a few months away.

I am not on a low income, no, its not particularily high either, but I dont have any family to support either.

I dont know why I made you angry, whats wrong with being glad that waste will be reduced, but extremely alarmed for the majority of humans on the planet for whom these food price increases will be a disaster if they continue?

Anyways my main point is that theres no point directing all of the complaints at the supermarkets, some may take advantage of the current situation a little but its not of their making.

Rice is a staple food for 3 billion people and the price has gone up 70% in the last year. That has huge and hideous ramifications, which individuals gripes about supermarkets do not come close to addressing.

Do they take advantage of it? Unless price fixing I am not sure they would. It's a feircely competitive market betwen Tesco/Sains/Asda etc...

Yeah, but I bet they're not paying a fortune for their heating

Only joking :D

My accommodation is free, including all my utility bills, except for the phone bill. And I get paid double the national average. But even I am beginning to notice the increased costs.

Coffe has gone up from 50c to 60c in the last month, eating out is being restricted to no more than three times a week.

God knows how I'll find it in UK this summer.

It would be interesting to know exactly how much of these price hikes is to do with food shortages, petrol prices and profit for the supermarkets.

I have now realised that Sainsbury's are thieving bastards.
A twin pack of Kleenex Ultra Balm tissues in there is £3.19, Tesco sells them for £2.18.

Doesn't really help us now when we're all on permanent wage-freezes (or "rises" that are not worthy of the name) and the cost of food and other essential things seems to rise every single month.

Unfortunately this is what happens when the global economy goes up shit creek... And everyone blames everyone else, the supermarkets are simply the most visible part of a whole stream of fuckups that goes all the way from the very top to the poorest. The poor are getting poorer, but this time many of the rich are too, and this means price hikes to keep shareholders happy. We've built our world on a tower which is looking increasingly like it only actually existed in theory... And other such dramatic statements, basically everything is fucked and the poorest (3rd world) suffer the most.

i advise you all to shop at ASDA. seriously, it's cheap as fuck! and food quality same as tesco et al :)

It is dolly but i have noticed things jumping up there too...........no shops are immune to this effect !

Even in netto i noticed that(for instance) a litre of sunflower oil has gone up by about 30p recently !

It's the big jumps in price that are making me uneasy...things are not going up by pence they are going up in big chunks !

Our payrise will be less than 2% p/a for the next 3 years (when we eventually get it) so considering increases in council tax, utilities, food etc actually works out at a huge cut. Apparently gas and electric will be going up by about 40% this year. I'm fucking bricking it. :(

Doubt we'll be getting a pay rise at all (we haven't had for YEARS).

With the apathy in this country I doubt that very much.

Sadly, you may be right. Instead we'll be stripping tree bark from the local parks to boil up as soup - just like in North Korea.

Resistance is a dirty word in the UK and we're proud of our stupid, servile docility.

Perhaps because the hardship caused by the latter outweighs any benefits caused by the former?

I had a 'cost of living' payrise of 2 3/4 % split into two over the year..........this brought me up to the princely sum of £6.03 an hour !

My HA rent went up 6 1/4 % this year alone........fuck knows where they get the 'cost of living' increase from but it's bollox imo !

And don't expect any pay-awards to be backdated anymore - nomatter how long the pay-negotiations take. The precedent for non-backdating has been set now that the police got fucked over.

We don't have pay-negotiations..........

When they announced that they had not even constructed an offer let alone begun negotiations on our payrise which was due 1st June () they stated that it would be backdated. I think they'd find it pretty hard to get out of that.

It really fucking pisses me off, the union submitted the pay claim yonks ago and we probably won't get it til christmas. Well who's gonna fucking pay my increased rent, council tax, electric, gas, food etc etc etc? Fucking arseholes.

They sent a message out a while ago talking about the bonuses the most deserving got.

Sorry rant over, back to supermarkets. :)

Unarguably food prices are going up across the board in the supermarkets - I noticed that milk price increased 5% last month in my local Tesco. However, Sainsburys are definitely the most expensive supermarket in town!

Urbanite extolling virtues of Asda,a member of the Wal-Mart group! mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, funny how principles go our of the window when there's cheaper stuff on offer.

You couldn't make it up. My ploitics are somewhat diiferent to most on here and even I refuse to shop at Asda, which is a bit of a pain at times as there's one across the road from work.

Politics sometimes go to the wayside when you are supporting others on a very low income..........pain in the arse but there you go !
