Sunshine

It was fun, borrowed quite a bit from Event Horizon, to its detriment. Also some very 'stock' characters- the steely commander, the one who cracks up under pressure, the slightly bonkers one...

Benedict Wong was great in a very straight role.

I thought it looked like bog-standard sc-fi.. maybe download it, certainly not cinema-worthy. But then I don't like Cillian Murphy.
I'd say there's absolutely no point watching a film like Sunshine on a crappy home system.

Part of its appeal is the immersive, big screen experience.

Me and Eme saw it last night and it was an entertaining movie. The plot gets a little daft at the end but as a fan of beautifully executed sci-fi graphics and having my chair wobble about to an almighty 'space rumble,' I wasn't left wanting!

I wouldn't mind starting a spoiler thread so we can talk about the ending - would people contribute to it though?

Why would you want to talk about the ending of a film you haven't seen?! Isn't that a bit like reading the last chapter of a book you fancy reading later?

Either way, without the visual effects and the context leading up to the final scene, I image the ending won't make for much of a discussion.

I've seen it and would like to talk about the ending but don't want to spoil it for others who may click on this thread, so was thinking it would be best to start a new thread with a spoiler alert

he has seen it though....
and yes, it'd be good to try and make sense of it... :) there was some bizarre-o editing that threw everything together at the end...

I was very confused by it but subsequent discussion with friends has maybe cleared it up a little. I'm not sure though..

sci-fi with religious overtones done by hit and miss master Danny Doyle.... i'll wait for the DVD. I like the looks of this but he's no Stanisław Lem so like 28 days later when the plot gets difficult the film will fall to bits..... that's my prediction. His films always have a habit of being good for at least 2/3rds of the way through then just falling out or tossing in ideas that should have been introduced or developed earilier on,

Ah, OK: sorry! Oops (reads back through the thread and sees it in black and white)

Feel free to start a new thread and add ALERT! SPOILER! WARNING! if you like.

Boyle not Doyle!
I'm with you there though - he has flashes of brilliance but never quite delivers

I'd say again that this film really needs the big screen to do it justice.

I don't think I would have enjoyed it half as much on a small screen.

I know, I bet he hates it when people call him that.

(reminds when I was convinced that Charlie Brooker read urban so I thought about calling him Charlie Cooker. Its annoying as feck to have your name mis-pronounced or spelt incorrectly when you're famous :D )

Obanite and I saw it last night and we thought it was pretty good. All the "dodgy" science is explained at some point in the film, but you won't always spot it.

8/10

:) Saw it last night, thought it was excellent, loved the sound/visuals & found it really kept your attention & elements of the science were pretty believable I found!

Absolutely has to be seen on the big screen. They make the Sun such a key element that at times it was so bright I had to rub my eyes!

I ultimately found it a bit dissappointing as the trailers for it got me expecting more than Boyle/Garland were able to deliver. Trailers also give too much away these days.

But if you have a weakness for sci-fi definitely see it on the biggest screen you can. Some truly awesome moments ;)

Trainspotting and half of 28 Days Later?

Incidentally, I can't believe there's a 28 Months Later coming out this year. Boyle's stayed away but a Spanish fella who directed the rather good Intacto is at the helm.

He was 2nd unit director on 28 Days later, and got to do most of the action sequences...

A mate was a script supervisor on it and on one morning had to go in an shoot a scene with a load of guys with flamethrowers; another was Robert Carlyle being pulled over by the OB with all his blood make-up on, blood over the car bonnet etc:D

Just a quick bump because a friend of mine watched it the other day and at the end...

...when they show Australia covered in snow she says: "Why is there snow everywhere?" So her boyfriend explains that it's because the Sun is dying, which is why they're trying to restart it.

"Oh" she says "I thought they were trying to blow up the Sun."

:rolleyes::D
