sunn o))) feb 22nd

Do they just run backline then, no actual PA system?
no i think they probably still use PA at big venues like the forum... but they could do ti without pretty easily at somewhere the size of corsica and still be much too loud

the sound is pretty much enough to make people faint!!
I found a quote from someone who has deon sound for them on a forum:

for backliners this is band is a joke. the one that doesn't know them gets to do the backline for them :p

in clubs the sound (especially the bass) is so loud you notice the air movement when you open a door. standing right in fornt of the PA set in the frontstage makes you sick.

they play with various setups, i know they used an all moog synth setup, but also bass, guitar, voice, some kind of mathematical old hewlett packard machines...

the wall of amps is a returning thing.
last time i saw them on a festival we had to set up 8 ampeg 8x10 cabs, 2 SVT classics, 2 SVT II, 2 SVTII pro, 2 marshall full stacks and they also had 2 hiwatt full stacks with them. everything DIMED.

more than two hours later the SVT's were still really hot (the amp itself, not only the tubes) they are great to have a laugh on a busy festival day :p"

Man I'd love to see these guys.

I only found out about them after I typed drone in to YouTube.
They are awesome, but I feel they need to be seen live.

it was pretty loud. it was great. it was just the main two with no singers etc. at the end they somehow hung there guitars from the ceiling and let them feedback like that for a while. did anyone else make it?

I probably would have gone to this :D They are one half of my scariest song of all time with Nurse With Wound.

I should have bought Jefe a ticket :(

I went. It was pretty immense although I stupidly forgot my earplugs, I used the free ones they had at bar for a bit but had them out for most of it. I felt like I should keep them in near the end but dropped one so I had one earplug to alternate between years for the last 15 minutes. Now everything I hear sound sounds slightly distant, probably going to take a few days to fully regain my hearing.

It did sound pretty amazing, and even though it was sold out I didn't feel completely crammed in. The guy walking through the crowd with the incense stuff at the start and hanging guitars at the end were highlights.

yep, loved it. it was pretty intense, kind of exhausting in a good way. they build up the atmosphere really well too.

my right ear is now a bit deaf...from about 2 SECONDS of earplug-less exposure. that'll learn me.

It was immense - I woke up in the middle of the night hearing a high pitched noise and was panicked by the thought that tinnitus had kicked in....

So I woke up my partner and told her - who fortunately confirmed that my neighbours seemed to be drilling which was a relief:D - although somewhat inconsiderate of them.

I wore the earplugs off the bar but they were very uncomfortable and muffled the sound really badly - I need to get some decent ones.

I've never seen a band quite like them before - I doubt I will again.

Awesome.:)

You've already damaged your ears rutabowa - you should think about getting special ones esp if you're a regular performer. I keep meaning to get some fitted myself.

i bought some but i lost them. (the band [sunn] wear them of course, but then they have to hear it a lot more than everyone else).

I dunno, some people just don't seem to get tinnitus. Me, I can't go to noise gigs anymore. I have noticeable tinnitus in my left ear and I don't want to aggravate it. I'm not convinced by earplugs at the volume levels you get with SunnO, Whitehouse, whoever. Plus I've never really been sold on volume for volume's sake anyway. I've been to enough concerts where the bass makes you wobble or whatever. So? I kind of quite like the sort of unblinking intransigence of it, I guess. The way, with Whitehouse or Merzbow, it's just a kind of "yes, we are indeed always louder than you were expecting".

Then again, having just said some people just don't seem to get tinnitus, I read one of noiso muso drummer friends saying hiis tinnitus had reached appalling levels, when he'd always previously said he'd never noticed it. So watch out.

i think this is probably right. a little bit of plastic in your ear is really not going to have that much effect.

for playing our own stuff we have definitely reduced volume to the point where you can hear what is going on to a certain extent rather than it just being white noise

Depends on the earplugs innit. If youo spend the money, you gets ones that work properly. just jamming foam in there isn't really the most efficient or safe method.

Also, I wish i'd gone to this.

I forgot to ask this a couple of weeks ago, but does anybody what the 2 or 3 songs played just before Sunn O))) came on were? One sounded like a recording of a fire for quite a long time before more droney stuff kicked in, wasn't new Wolve in the Throne Room was it?
