Suggested Mayday? Nearly 100K in prison.

i think that is an excellent idea

and to those who think prison works .. the proof is in these numbers .. prison and our society is NOT working ..

i do not in any way think it is wrong to lock up (even execute) some people who need to be taken out of the loop ... these figures though ask us to question why we have SO many locked up and whether that is working for us as ordinary people

but this is about how as a society we have, in only 20 years, gone from having 40k in prison to 100K and how it iondicates how badly things have gone wrong

Well said that man. :D

Critical Resistance in the USA have achieved a lot in nearly 10 years, but here is one interesting achievement;

Critical Resistance’s popularization of the term “prison industrial complex” as a victory. “They took an obscure term and introduced that into public language and public speak. So, the concept of the prison industrial complex is something that people all around the world will use freely, right now. Ten years ago, it was only used by academics.”

Not really : I've never heard any of my American mates talk about such a thing. They still call it "jail"...

it's estimated that one in three prisoners have at least 2 identifiable mental illnesses. Reform the health system and build more mental hospitals? no build five new super-prisons and give the contracts to your pfi cunt friends. Well done.

Thing is
attica protests, solidarity, direct action etc. just do not fucking work. Wait for it to go shits up properly (which it will) then we might see some change

A few Yanks - Proves nothing. You can still use Jail and P.I.C in different contexts...

I don't think I've ever heard my Yank friends talk about the "Prison Industrial Complex"... Proves that you ascertain that its in common speech to be incorrect...

A few of your buddies proves nothing.

Careful Jaed - he'll accuse you of being "boring" in a minute - stock response when he's challenged to back up his bullshit.

I quoted an article from a serious magazine who interviewed Critical Resistance. That will do for me.

The Market State (i.e. Neo Liberal capitalist state) is continuing the path of expanding the Prison Welfare disciplinary ethic is a key characteristic of its driving force these days. The incarceration of ever growing numbers of people is not a solution to anything;
