Suggest a film like Sideways, Darjeeling Limited, Garden State....

I always like to point to that film when people slag off Nicolas Cage. While I think he's a shit action actor, I actually think he's brilliant at playing deadbeats and so on.

I love the writer's convention scene.

"What if I wrote a story where nothing happens... you know, just like real life?"

"Wait - NOTHING HAPPENS in real life?"

My mate reminded me the other day of when we went to see that in the cinema and I was laughing embarrassingly loudly in that scene...

:D Yeah I loved that scene too, Brian Cox is great.

I get a bit worried about these types of films because sometimes they are excellent and sometimes they are boring and kookyfied. Garden State was one of the most annoying films I've ever seen, cheer the up JD fromScrubs! God he was so miserable, I pretty much hated him.
I totally agree. Having had a minor crush on JD, I was quite looking forward to the Garden State. It was shite! He was really annoying and Natalie Portman's oh so kooky character was infuriatingly irritating! I kind of liked the film's premise, but the film just wasn't good enough to pull it off. Plus I had to watch that drugs scene with my mum next to me, which was terribly cringy. :o

However,

He could've been in Lost in Translation too, the most boring film about selfish people ever.
Aw come on, Scarlet Johansson's character wasn't that bad, or if she wasn't acting perfecting, was perhaps doing so as she wasn't in great circumstances!

the film that comes to mind after reading through this thread-- and so not really relevant to the OP--- is :
DOWN BY LAW.

give it a go!

another Lost in translation hater here... though I liked Garden State somehow so ???

Just watched I Heart Huckabees :)

I want to watch it again!

Cool film, strange and funny. I really like Jason Schwartzman, he is so cool!

Um.... gosh.... its quite hard, but hopefully I wont get flamed for these

Juno
Chasing Amy
Clerks/Clerks 2
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Thumbsucker
Singles
City Of Lost Children

Trying to think of ones that havent been mentioned that *could* fit into a triple bill with 2 of the films you mentioned.

That sounds interesting, and with two of my favourite actors too, how did I miss that one...
I saw Snowcake at the Cornerhouse (the independent/art-house cinema and art gallery and cafe bar in Manchester).

I'm not sure whether it received a general release, because I don't think it was on at the local multiplexes, I guess it was more indy than big box office and didn't get any takers among the major distributors? I'm guessing. Because it's a good film that certainly deserved a wider audience.

I have to admit I was particularly interested because of Sigourney Weaver's portrayal of a high-functioning autistic woman. There was a directors and writers talk after the screening at the Cornerhouse, and the woman who wrote it, Angela Pell, has an autistic son, and Sigourney Weaver apparently spent some time with an autistic woman.

if you like that kind of thing you should deffo google up Daniel Trammet (sp) who's biography Born On A Blue Day explains how the mind of whom is believed to be the worlds highest functioning autistic person works. Its fascinating. There is also a tv program out there about him, where they tested all his abilities.

Best is when they gave him a day ( I think) to learn Finnish, as it was believed to be the hardest language to learn, and then do a live TV interview in Finland. Not only did he ace it, he also learned enough to understand the nuances of the language and joke in it too (sample quote - 'for you, speaking Finnish is natural, but I feel like I have asthma')

I saw a preview screening of Sunshine Cleaning at the weekend. It's a charming film and would definitely fit with the brief in the OP.

Sounds interesting. Sadly it isn't torrentable anywhere :(

Hello,

I'm in the mood for a film that may include travel, humour, some comment on the human condition. Nothing too intense....any ideas?

Thanks

e2a great cinematography too...

Have you seen O Brother, Where Art Thou? Got a bit of all the above.
