Sue/use by date

I've seen people on this thread mentioning out of date cheese in the fridge!

What do you think cheese is excactly?

Off milk product. The longer you leave it, the more mature and dried it becomes until you're left with something parmesan-esque. Its fine to eat at all these stages.

I once made 'I can't believe its not parmesan!' by forgetting a lump of Caerphilly in the back of my fridge.

If I was you, I'd have bought it straight away, opened it when i got home and let it breathe/rot for a few days.....

This is not a good idea.

In the process of aging, a carcass with the outer layer of fat
intact is quickly chilled, then hung in a temperature, humidity and airflow controlled environment. The enzymes withing the meat then begin to soften the muscle and connective tissue and bring the meat out of rigor mortis.

An "off" or out of date joint from Sainsbury's is not going through this process, it is simply rotting as external bacteria's get stuck in.

Rotten meat is NOT "aged" or "well-hung" meat.

So that's how I can get veggie parmesan then! :D

I don't understand when it says on jars of pickled onions 'once opened, keep refridgerated and eat with so many days' THEY'RE PICKLED! Pickling preserves them!
I'm not that concerned about things being out of date. I'd probably be more aware with meat, but I don't do that so it doesn't concern me :)

I went to Sainsbury's yesterday and found that they had meat past it's use by date on the shelves, it was well manky, all brown and rotten. I had to tell them so the section manager came over to take a look and we found about another 3 beef joints and some manky steak. It's not good enough, what if someone who is partially sighted picks it up without noticing and keeps it for a Sunday roast?

A friend of mine used to work as a shelf-stacker on the night shift at Sainsburys. One night when cleaning the meat shelves like you he discovered a mouldy bit of meat. He was on his way to chuck it when his boss asked him where he thought he was going. He was told to go and put it by the mincer! He never ate burgers from that day!

I used to work in a Butchers shop. All of the out dated stuff was indeed put through the mincer. It was sold as pet mince for dogs.
