sudo rm

crispy - thank you - you are very kind - shall be in touch - tonight though, i will some time reflecting and relaxing offgrid as it were. Will probably do me good. :)

crispy fixed it for me! woohoo! what a guy! thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou! crispy for president!

this 'friend' is a specialist! He's a consultant on these matters. The specific command is sudo rm - R. I'm not too worried about lost data cos i just have music, which is backed up on my ipod, but i don't know how to get my apps back

Next time you see your 'friend, twat the fucker, what a prick he is.

he already flamed me for not responding to a mealy-mouthed 'apology' and refusing to apologise back for calling him a cunt and a midget and using his real name on the internet (i admit that was a bad idea - 'never get personal' is a good motto to live by), but then he just let loose such a tide of complete venom against me on another forum that i was taken aback, so i decided not to play along with it anymore. i now don't think he thought i'd run that command but it was still a shitty thing to do in context and his behaviour since hasn't endeared me to him much. i'll try and forget about it though. no-one died.

Come on then Crispy, how did you do it?

By the way, I'm a professional software engineer with plenty of familiarisation with *nix, and yet when configuring servers and various other complex tasks, I've still blindly copied instructions on web forums. Alright, I know what rm does, but you inherently have to do so much console-based working with unfamiliar stuff that this could happen to most people, never mind newbies.

he re-installed leopard from an external hard drive (i think) and then managed to get all the files from my iPod onto my Mac through a very complicated process that i can't begin to understand - it looked like that was the biggest challenge to me. i had to leave it overnight whilst all the files transferred as i'd already taken up way too much of his generously given time.

Well, it turned out that only /Applications was hosed, but it sill wouldn't boot. But the only valuable data was the music collection, so just reinstalled OSX and copied the music over from the ipod, did all the system updates and good to go. No big deal :)

everything seems to be working quicker anyhow - it's correcting my spelling like an american, but i shall customise it all at the weekend to my old preferences.

nah, what would i get out of it? and it would just get circulate til everyone's covered in shit. what's the point in that? only cunts bear grudges.
