sudo rm

If he had the common sense to actually check search engines to find things out (the entire point of that particular thread) rather than bleating to everyone else about "how do i do this? how do i do that?" then perhaps all of this would not have happened in the first place.

^^ this. I'll give you I'm a bit geeky so other people may not feel the same way but I would always try and learn (or at least get a rough idea) commands that I should stay away from when using any type command shell/prompt/whatever.

You simply shouldn't be there if you don't know what your doing.

I cant get over the fact that many apple users don't realize that as a bsd based OS it can do some pretty powerful things in its command shell, which you most defiantly dont want to fuck with if you dont have a clue.

If it was a command that doesnt suggest what it does I might have more sympathy. RM = ReMove.........

that's all gobbledook to most people.
most people just want their computer to work. they don't want to know how it works. tis like plumbing.

yes but would you take advice on plumbing from someone in the pub just because they say there an 'expert'?

and couldn't you at least make an effort to learn or research?

How do the fuck do you derive 'many apple users' would fall for entering sudo-rm into the terminal from this thread? This is about one user being deceived and putting his trust in supposed friends, no more or less.

In general, all but the extremely geeky are best away from the command line. It admittedly that kind of stuff stuff hasn't been part of the mac world for well over a decade or more - this hasn't the dos legacy after all - but this trick specifically needed someone to instruct another exactly how to fuck their computer over. You don't just stumble accidently to a terminal window and start typing in commands on a machine, mac or otherwise.

You're a fucking idiot.

The OP made clear that he didn't know what he was doing, which is precisely why he asked for help from people who do know what they're doing. And then they turn around and tell him to type in a command that wipes his computer. They are fucking arseholes, plain and simple.

If you don't want to help someone in situations like this, that's fine. Don't help them. But going out of you way to fuck them over is the actions of a cunt.

As for your lament about Apple users: get the fuck over yourself. Most people, whether on Apple or Windows, buy computers to do stuff like browse the internet, send email, use a word processor, play games, etc. I'd be willing to bet that well over 98 percent of home computer users never use, and never need to use, the command line. Arguing that they should know how to use the command line is like arguing that the owner of a new car should know how to monitor and fix a computer-controlled fuel injection system. Completely useless to the vast majority of the population.

I'm not going to win this one with you lot but put it like this its the same reason you dont use wikipedia on its in research or anything remotely academic.

All information you have you shouldn't trust and should be checked. end of.

Yes... The problem is that this also happens on Ubuntu forums and IIRC there were warnings about it. Its not obvious these days what it does and (for good or bad) unix based operating systems are much more popular.

This James Baker is a complete and utter cunt. Its probably the only bit of techy know-how he knows. And the fact that he's specifially registered on U75 to show how smug he is indicates how desperately sad he is.

You don't just stumble accidently to a terminal window and start typing in commands on a machine, mac or otherwise.

Again, yes. Since he also needed to enter his password correctly. (There should also be a warning displayed the first time you use "sudo"...)

Oh. Before I forget. xxxx : stupid smug fuckwit of a cunt.

FWIW, I tend to find most mac users more clued up other OSs than the average pc bod, largely because they've often had to co-exist and work with windows in their everyday employment.

My experience is that the vast majority of those choosing to buy macs voluntarily are more similar to Crispy and FM than naive computer-unfussed folks like Orang or the lazy tech-incompetent ad agency stereotype.

Yeah, but this is why lots of techies are fucking shit at the human interface bit, because they can't get over the fact that people are more different than computers*. ;) :D

There's millions of computer users, Apple or otherwise, who just want to type emails, and couldn't care less what their operating system does under the shell - I mean, do you care what your fridge does round the back? I don't - but might follow advice if an acknowledged forum "expert" gives it.

I've done that joke, at work, with mates... but anytime I thought that there was ANY chance of being taken remotely seriously, always with the caveat "don't *actually* DO this".

I guess it comes down to trust. If your computer is that important to you, and you need help with it, go to someone you know first, rather than the internet.

*Obviously, not meaning you (as I don't know you), but you know what I mean, right? I work with people who I swear commune with their computers in binary...

of course I know what you mean. and your spot on I'm shit at human computer interfaces! I always make them too complex! so I suppose I have a different outlook than most people. Still if your not paying for the help you should check the info you have, to not only prevent this sort of shit happing but to make sure the info you have is correct. I'm not talking compare it word for word or anything but you'll at least have a rough idea if your doing something as dumb as this.

right thats the end of this thread for me as I'm just gonna get flamed by the 'users'

Fwiw, I don't actually think you're wrong, just... coming at it from a purely techie pov. If I had 10p for everytime I've wanted to tell a customer:

Code:
router> (enable) clear config all

Just, you know... time and place. :D

I guess it depends what sort of circles you hang out in.

You know where i see more Macs than anywhere else? In academia. I'm a grad student, and the majority of my friends over the last seven or eight years have been grad students and professors. Quite a few of my best friends now are university lecturers.

And they all have two things in common: they all know fuck-all about computers, and they all use Macs. And they use them because, for the most part, they work, and are relatively easy for a non-expert to use.

Also, i can assure you that not one of them has ever even contemplated using the command line. In fact, i'd be surprised if they even realize that it's possible. If they asked me for help with their computer, and i told them to use the "sudo rm" command, they would do it without question, because they trust me to help them. But i'm not that much of a cunt.

What are you trying to do OU? Not surprised you're getting the grey screen - I suspect you'll have to reinstall the OS, fresh from DVD or use your mac as one big hard drive. And if it's the latter, you'll still need to do the install Mac OSX thing afterwards

i also find this to be true - most people buy macs 'cause they look nice, and have a simple user-friendly interface. the last people, in fact, who'd know (or want to know) a whole lot about programming...

Not in my experience, people get Macs recommended to them because they are tech-less or buy they macs because they are trendy.

i'm trying to re-install, but how can i do anything if all i get is grey screen and noisy drive?

Insert the OSX installation DVD and restart the computer, whilst holding down the C key. This forces a boot from CD. Installation is easy if you follow the instructions, but it'd probably help to post here while you do it. You might need to reformat the hard drive first.

This all assumes that you're giving up on retreiving the old data (probably impossible anyway)
