sudo rm

:D

cd / to move to the top directory of your drive

Thinking about it, you'll probably need to use cd /Volmes/Macintosh\ HD/ if you're booted from the Install DVD, otherwise you'll just end up looking at its contents instead of your HD :o

They don't these days, but if you restart it while holding the mouse button down, it should eject the DVD.
Apple make great computers, but i think that not having a hardware mechanism (button, pinhole, whatever) for ejecting a disc is about the most fucking retarded design decision i've ever come across.

My wife's MacBook Pro disc drive has been having trouble reading quite a few discs lately. If the drive on my PC starts hunting and is clearly having trouble, i can just push the button and pop the disc out. On the Mac, we have to wait about 5 minutes while it whirrs and clicks and spins and fucks about, before it will finally spit the fucking thing back out.

Retarded.

Either way it's firmware. If your drive cocks up you won't be able to press a button or poke a hole (and I am having this trouble with my PC box right now).

typical apple 'design'! not retards but itards!

and Orang Utan I'm seriously trying not to take the piss but the moral of the story is not to run commands you don't have a clue about!

RM is a commonly used unix/linix command for remove/deleting files

I think the moral of the story actually is that any computer expert who is trusted by less techy friends to help them with techy stuff but then tells them to do such a command, possibly telling them that it will free up hard disk space, or that the computer will run faster as a result, is a cunt.

Indeed. That's a friendship-breaking piece of wankery.

thanks all.
i'm beginning to see the funny side.
another friend fell for it...
You mean this cunt has done this to more than one person? He seriously needs a good fucking kicking.

There is no funny side. People have incredibly important stuff on their computers these days, stuff that they can't afford to lose. Yes, i know people should have secure backups of all important files, but the fact is that plenty of people don't, and causing someone to erase their hard drive could seriously fuck with their life.

No, there isn't a funny side really.

People trust me about technical things because they think I'm a decent person and know what I'm talking about. I'm sure I could advise them to do things which would fuck their computers, but it would be about as funny as, you know, them trusting me with their keys so I could go round and fix their sink, and instead my nicking their telly and taking a big dump on their bed. "Ha ha! Pwned! Caught you there!" No, actually, it's just being a cunt.

What extra truth are we gaining here? It looks exactly as originally told - orang was duped into running the command by someone who abused their trust and knowledge. Complete cunt.

Orang may be guilty of being naive, but the person intentionality getting him to trash his Mac is a nasty, malicious piece of work.

Was that you?

What OU is failing to tell anyone is that he carried out this operation because someone else said that it "free'd up more HD space" not because it made the internet or apple click faster - that was the clincher but as that person is actually friend of OU's he hasn't been in the firing line at all. so instead attributes all the blame at just one person.

It was all a big joke, one we all thought OU was surely in on. There was no malicious intent at all, just a wind-up aimed at somebody who comes across incapable of doing things for himself in relation to computers (a trait OU freely admits to using in order too, you guessed it WIND PEOPLE UP)

If he had the common sense to actually check search engines to find things out (the entire point of that particular thread) rather than bleating to everyone else about "how do i do this? how do i do that?" then perhaps all of this would not have happened in the first place.

Oh well that's all ok then. All is forgiven. You didn't do anything wrong. Welcome back to the family. Have a hug.

There's a longstanding internet tradition of In The Know sorts telling eachother to `rm -rf /` mostly with tongue firmly in cheek, I guess that's what this was?

You should stop bleating, apologise, and help him fix it even if you didn't intend him to do it.

no, i was only saying that to wind her up even more. most of my ignorant questions are genuine. i have now learnt to ask for help here cos no one talks down to you or treats you like shit cos you have no interest in IT.
why are you even bothering to turn up here and stir again, you dreadful little man?

yeah it was, massively.

Someone even posted this explaining exactly what this command would do when it was run.

Orang just simply said "wevs" to that and obviously didn't click on it..

btw, he apologised for his part in it, even though it was unwitting. you've done sod all.

Well, nice of him to show his face, ain't it? You know, the sadsack nerd with the stormingly funny sudo rm joke.

At first Orang, I didn't think that anyone could fall for this one. Initially I thought it was a wind up, but then I thought of those involved (ie you) and realised that you were that naive with computers. I'd like to think these people. your supposed internet pals, would take that on board before cracking out the big box of geek funnies.

So congrats sudo-rm, you're a highly amusing man
