Subway fast food outlets

there's too much choice, it's confusing.

That's what puts me off, I'm worried I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb as someone who has never been in a Subway before.

Big fucking wow - it's not as though the staff really know what they're doing in there. Pick a basic sandwich and let them guide you through the process - just point at the salad things you want to add essentially and choose from a selection of artificial breads and weird sauces. And that's about it.

What salad items do they have? I'm not a massive fan of salad, unless it's potato salad, coleslaw or pasta/rice salad.

I don't like lettuce, tomatoes or cucumber.

What weird sauces do they have?

Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, onion, red onion, jalapenos, olives and gherkins. Maybe there's a couple more but I can't remember them :)

The sauces are all over the place - honey and something, "ranch dressing", some garlic thing and bog standard mayo and ketchup.

1) Choose your bread from the list (including whether you want 6" or 12"),
2) choose from a list of preset combinations, like Meatball Marinara, Steak&Cheese or Sweet Onion Chicken Teryaki,
3) choose whether you want cheese or not
4) choose whether you want it toasted or not
5) choose what salad items you want (if any)
6) choose what sauces you want
7) choose if you want a meal or just the sandwich.

It always strikes me as bizarre that the little Panini shop opposite sells larger meatball 'subs' with decent cheese, better m'balls and a natural tasting sauce for less than the price of Subway, despite having none of the economies of scale.

Most of the indepedents round my way charge about £4 for a meatball sandwich. Subway is £1.99 on the right day.

I've been three times and enjoyed two of them. I didnt like the Chicken Teryaki, it was tasteless to me.

However, I would kill for their Honey/oat bread. Its so light and not at all plastic tasting. I would happily munch on just that I think.......

That is maybe the only thing that can be said for them, AFAIK they are the only mass-market food firm here that does not use the Chorleywood Bread Process.

They use the US equivalent process instead but that is a world away & a hell of a lot better for you than CBP. Hence the reason that many UK customers comment on the "strange, light/soft/spongy" texture of Subway bread. :)

I'm sure I'd heard from a reliable source that Subway pumps an artificial smell out the front on their shops. This allows them to give the impression of it all being done on site without having to open in A5 (hot food) premises or applying for a change of use.

It all seemed plausible but I can't find anything but other blog comments or forum posts to back it up so it's probably bollocks which is a shame as it was my favorite conspiracy story. Can anyone tell me it's true? I'm sure they at least fan the smell out though.

There is an awful lot of discussion about the 'subway smell' though. I don't actually mind it though

As for the subway experience, I quite like them although I find the franchises to be a bit hit and miss.

I know exactly what you're talking about, put me off for a long time too. I felt the same with coffee shops (lots of confusing pronunciations, tall = small, confuses the fuck out of me)

I had one a couple of years back, and have never felt moved to try a second. I'm not entirely sure I made it all the way through the first.

More power to subway luvvaz, though. Aye aye eh eh.

Subway's not really all that bad. If you resisit the temptation to ask for "All the muthafuckin meat and cheese you can give me!!!" it's a pretty healthy meal. No idea what the pay's like for the workers, though.

Usually around £5.50 an hour even in london:(

Oh but that looks so difficult, and scary! Better just avoid subway so I dont have to worry about making a fool of myself.

Well, it's one of the few takaway chains that will guarantee you a vegan meal, so that gets it plus points in some way....
What do you have- just bread and salad? The veggie pattie isnt vegan you know...

I quite like the odd Subway now and again - I'm pretty restrained considering there are three of four on the 2 mile strip just round the corner from from me.

Only problem is the cost - a fiver for a 12 incher with all the trimmings. Tasty mind, though very fattening.

I like Subway. I have the 6'' veggie delight on wheat bread with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, olives, peppers, jalopeno peppers and sometimes sweetcorn. I usually have it toasted.

I'm not keen on them. I'd rather go to a local place. I don't like the overwhelming smell of yeast when you walk past, and there's too much choice, it's confusing.

They smell of yeast?

Why is it that when these perfectly acceptable chains open up in UK, they manage to be fucked up in really weird ways?

Nah. Over here, Subway, KFC etc are just purveyors of food. Those who don't like it, don't eat there, those who do, do; and all without fanfare.

No-one cares about the dangers of fast food multi-nationals there?

God awful food and all at the expense of the local independent chains.

The thing I hate most is the bread probably, its just terrible. You simply cannot compare it to a freshly baked baguette or a crusty loaf. Reformed meats, sickly sauces, and pristine salads that are tasteless.

And fucking hell the decor, its so miserable and lifeless - exactly the problem with all multinational chain stores.

I accept that people can like different things, fine, but Subway - how? Why?

It also pisses me off that they masquerade with all this 'eat fresh' and 'healthy' bullshit. Most of the stuff on the menu is just as bad as anything else, and it makes me laugh when they try to offer cheese with everything by default. And fresh? How exactly do they get away with that? Lettuce and tomatos which are pre-chopped and bagged in a factory then shipped out to the stores, is that fresh?
