Subway Bread... the mystery

I once watched two of the fuckwits in Cardiff having a stand up row over whether it was onions or peppers first - WHO GIVES A FUCK!!

would that be the one on St Mary's st?
They are completely inept in there

Eeeeeuuwww. I generally rate Subway in the same bracket as Maccy D’s, Burger King, KFC and the likes. i.e. you wouldn’t catch me dead in there.... I did eat a few Subways years ago and though it was pretty mingin’. And rubbish for veggies. I’m sure when I was there in oz all that was in a veggie delight was all the salad – rip off. And the bread ain’t nothin to write home about imho. But, each to there own.

the only reason I go to subway over privately owned sandwich chains is that they do quite healthy sandwiches. private ones always give you paninnis dripping in grease and mayo :(

The health things to watch out for in sandwiches are not the grease bu the weird fats and sugars in the bread.

No, Subway is great, really healthy as far as I can tell, and as long as you make them put all the veggies on. Is the guy in the advert Jared: the one who used to be fat but is now just ugly?

I don't believe that it is healthy or good. Any way, don't you eat pies at football matches?
I think he probably is the, was fat now just ugly bloke. I think I saw him on some prog about fast food. Might have been that eating McDonalds film.

They do six subs with six grams of fat or less and it's stuffed full of salad. How can it not be good for you?

Do you believe the McDonald's salads are good for you?

I should think the bread is of dubious nutritional value.

Also, I don't suppose they are too bothered about the production methods used by thier suppliers, or food miles or owt like that.

Dunno. If you like it, then it's good for you.

Indeed. I just had one for lunch. :p

If you choose a healthy opetion its likely to be better for you than anything you can buy in any other fast food place

exactly.

sometimes it is necessary to eat on the go. while subways may not be the bees knees of healthyness, it's undoubtedly a better option than a big mac meal.

i do find a lot of sanctimoniousness about what we eat, where we buy stuff on this board, as though we should all be able to make perfectly healthy and ethically sound choice all the time. sometimes that isn't practical or affordable. surely picking what you consider to be the more healthy, or more ethical option out of what is practical for you, is a better option, showing some level of awareness of the issues, and not deserving of blanket condemnation.

Sanctimony?

The problem is that we have inperfect information. We don't have good information about what is healthy and what is not. And also the food that is sold is not labelled.

I couldn't give a monkey's about where people eat. But if someone starts a thread about how great Subway bread is and how healthy their sandwiches are, they are going to get my wisdom on the matter.

Subway bread IS the reason I don't like Subway.....too soft, no crust.

Bleeuuurghh!
I know... and Quizno's is hard as a rock. What can you do?
(If you don't have this franchise in the UK, consider yourselves lucky...) :p

I eat at Subway only because it's the least of the fast-food evils.

LMHF, it was the one by the castle, and I went in, tempted by the free refills on pop because I had a stinking hangover and needed to rehydrate!

(Would have been better off going into The Goat Major for a hair of the dog and a bag of Mini Cheddars though!)

They;d closed off the upstairs when we went in that one the other day, the seats such as they are by the window were occupied by 8 teenagers, only one of whom was eating and we were sent upstairs ( just duck under the barrier  ) and had to eat in the dark on dirty tables

try my new arsenic flavor loaf it has only 3 grams of fat and is free of artificial couloring

Here's the nutrition part of the subway website:

http://www.subway.co.uk/menu_nutrition_info.asp

A quick skim through shows that a single wrap can have as much 5g of salt in, which is almost all the daily recommendation of 6g, and most of the other options have around 3-4g of salt in, with the exception of the veggie one which only has 1.3g.

The bread accounts for around 0.8-1g of this total, which is not dissimilar to the amount of salt in two slices of normal shop-bought bread.

I can't believe how many threads there are on Subway on Urban. There's been about 3 in the last six months.

Anyway, never eaten one, never will.

Yep, nothing surpising really about the high fat and sugar levels in a Subway sandwich. I once had a 'Meatball Marinara' and was thirsty for days - that'll have been the 3.8 grams of salt I'd eaten. I suppose the Veggi Delite is healthy enough, but I find the bread a bit fakey and don't like the Subway chain an its dominance of sandwich-land.

pssst - this is one of the old ones ;)

I read somewhere that subway meat had the highest level of nitrites than any other fast food place.Whatever nitrites are?

I've only ever eaten a subway sandwich once. Can't remember what the filling was but the bread was very sweet and the thing was good value at £1.80 for a 12" sub.

As this was post pub / spliff and I had the munchies something chronic it was a case of cometh the moment, cometh the sandwich.
