Indeed it did, the wife went to see it, even she couldn't really understand why it was shown that way (trama). However for some reason Warner have fireflys so it's not part of the Ghibli collection (it does feature as a making of on one of the DVDs though).
It is part of the Ghibli Collection now, includes a bonus DVD with documentaries on. I brought it the other week!

I meant in Japan. The J.disc is a warner and the Fireflys feature is on another disc.
All the other discs look really nice together. I have them all but wont be buying earthsea after watching a test disc from optimum. What a load of utter shit.

It's not good enough for me. Yuck. I've never been a fan of Korinai no Buta (the red pig or something) but earthsea makes it look like a master work.

I hear the sea is another of my wife's favorites (Buta is also one of her favorites) that I was never a big fan of that now looks amazing in comparison.

I'd rather watch the DVD that is just ghibli adverts on a loop forever than sit though eathsea again.

You mean Porco Rosso...the pig-faced Red Baron type dude? Terrible film...but true Earthsea managed to be worse.

I have:

Laputa Castle in the sky
Howl's moving castle
Grave of the fireflies
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Nausicaa

and on the strength of this thread have just bought My Neighbour Totoro from HMV.com for only 4.99inc delivery!

Which is nice! :D

You are missing two of my favorites 'kiki' and 'the cat returns a favor'

I bought The Cat Returns at Christmas, is that the same one?

Yes Sorry I took a liberty with the badly translated title (Ghibli's fault not translators).

Ongaishi means to return only as in returning a favor, not 'coming back'.

Can you guess these literal translations of the Ghibli films original Japanese titles?

Listen very carefully with your ears.
Gedo's tale about war.
The Crimson Pig.
Sen and Chihiros Vanishing.
Memories, boo hoo.

The only one I can have a go at is The Crimson Pig i.e. Porco (sp. sorry!) Rosso?

Although is Sen and Chihiro's Vanishing "Spirited Away?

P.S. I really like "The Cat Returns" as well

The Crimson Pig is 'Porco Rosso' which is a fantastic film :)

Mimi wo Sumaseba = Whisper of the Heart... it's kinda like a title and tagline rather than a translation

Omohide Poro Poro = Only yesterday... but then translating japanese sound effects it always a bit of an odd one...

it's always a tad odd when the japanese studio pick a translation...

Are you playing my game or a different one?

Bin bon bin bon seikai!

Totoro is my favourite :)

Probably then Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away, then Pom Poko :)

My flatmate doesn't like my animes 'because they're cartoons'. What a nutter...

Want!

(it's a tanuki, like in Pom Poko :D I wasn't getting this thread mixed up with 'I'm on ur boardz...' :D)

O..

Not really, I can see what they meant. 'Listen carefully with your ears' does not sound all that poetic in it's literal translation but kind of means the same sort of thing as 'Whisper of the heart', or rather it might conjure the same wistful images. It's more of a poetic translation.

The dub hatin' in here is quite puristic and geeky :p;)

I thought it was completely unjustified until I switched to the subtitled version of 'Graveyard Of The Fireflies' 25 minutes in last night- the dub on that isn't so good.

But c'mon, Totoro and Spirited Away feature pretty decent dubs :)

Those two are not too bad as they go. Kiki is utterly shit and so is mononoke. Hal was a pretty good dub.

a lot of the dubs are shit

the ones that aren't shit are still not as good as the original voice acting

what's not to hate?

yes i understand whay you would want them for young children but in all other places they are unnecessary... i mean would you dub seven samurai?

like akira and eva?

coming next summer the live action version of totoro...

Aw, I went to the Ghibli Museum and I really wanted a go on the cat bus but it's kids only. Next time we have a plan (Mrs Suplexes idea). We can stick baby suplex on the bus, train her to cry on demand, then we rush on to help her out.

Shoes off, weeeeeee, CATBUS!
