it's a part of a larger remodernism movement going on right now. the stuckists are just a bit more publicity hungry than the other more sedate remodernists who are just getting on with being more figurative and romantic.

So modernism = figurative and romantic now?

edit - reading the wikipedia thing, the 'going back to start hoing forward again' thing accounts for that. But surely their project is more like reromanticism what with all this expression of human spirituality stuff?

didnt the name come from tracey emin telling her ex billy childish that his work was 'stuck stuck stuck'

 :D

No!! :D

They're* using is as opposed to Post-modernism innit.

Is just a word

*The Stuckists/Remodernists

Come on, you seriously saying their thing is nothing to do with modernism?

from the wikipedia page: "Its premise is that the potential of the Modernist vision has not been fulfilled, that its development has been in the wrong direction and that this vision needs to be reclaimed, redefined and redeveloped"

they made up the name  suspect as you say, they are redoing modernism on their own terms. the fact that the work references romanticism doesn't mean that it isn't remodernism. think the main point is that they are kicking back against abstraction, conceptual, modernist and post-modernist art and what it stands for.

edit - it's another movement with another name. whether they choose to identify with a historic movement is their perrogative.

BINGO!!!:D

*After* Modernism is what they are trying to achieve, they are not happy with the way post modernism turned out so want to be able to replace it.

This is taken from their webiste maybe it will help you to understand them a bit better :)

From here http://www.stuckism.com/info.html

Stuckism regards the foundation of Modernism in art as an opportunity for vision, integrity and communication which has never been fulfilled.

The Stuckists are, therefore, opposed to the current pretensions of so-called Brit Art, Performance Art, Installation Art, Video Art, Conceptual Art, Minimal Art, Body Art, Digital Art and anything claiming to be art which incorporates dead animals or beds - mainly because they are unremarkable and boring.

sounds like a good idea. while i think post-modernism has some wonderful ideas in some fields, in others it's a complete wank-sandwich.

I dont favour either, I do have a problem with people being 'taught' that one way is more credible or worthy though.

I see Stuckism as simply being a reaction to Conceptualism. Nothing new. It's just alwayshasbeenism. Not that I don't like it - I do.

Totalism is where it's really at. Totalism is going to be bigger than all of us and all of them put together. Totally massive.

I have yet to be convinced by the the stuckists/remodernsists. IMHO they have nothing interesting to say and I'm yet to see a piece of work that moves me.

Maybe it's just becuase I'm a conceptual junkie that I find their manifesto so offensive but I can't help it. It seems laughable to me.

Hmm while some of the paintings are 'good' I know what you mean!!

I think the conceptual thing had kind of been programmed into anyone who has been to art school or had anything to do with the art world in the last 30 or so years.

In one way, this is a bad thing, the beauty we see is not of the art as a media, and as a skill, and a craft; but the idealism and conceptualism behind it.

We say "What is the artist thinking/feeling/expressing/sharing with this piece?" rather than "Fuck me that boy can paint well what a gorgeous painting he must be a real craftsman!":D  ;)

Not if you know it's all bullshit to begin with and don't allow yourself to be moulded into yet another art student who ends up on the scrapheap of life doing something entirely detached from the idealistic aims they once had, and that's a hell of a lot of people. All of it is bullshit. You don't get anywhere trying to explain this opinion to the people attempting to mould you either - kinda why I gave up going tbh, well that and I used to 'test' the tutors by doing REALLY shit work, I'm talking blatantly shit and still getting the same praise for doing it, they were wasting my time.
