Struggling Seedlings

Mrs Magpie said:
Mine get sun for half the day...btw Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) for cracks between paving...you only have to sow them once and they'll self-sow for evermore.

I know where I would like to put them (got the seeds last time you mentioned it) but its not in direct sunshine (infact its behind a hedge)

maybe I'll just try it anyway :D

I bought those 2 recomendations Mrs M. I also got some peas to join the beans and some foxgloves, cause they will remind me of the garden my parents used to have.

My convolvulus are coming up nice and strong looking, I'll need to get them in pots soon. But my pansies, Lobelia and snapdragons haven't come up at all - not even sprouts :(

My Seedlings!!!!!!!

.....have shrivelled in my absence!

How much water do tomatoes need? Is it lots? Must the soil always be damp?

I think I dried them out! :( :(

Will they recover if I water them? The leaves have shrunk...

I'm a bad mother! This sucks - I was getting on so well and was so excited about growing things..

hi aqua
I dont know if you have any poundland cheap shops near where you live, they are selling 5ft long cloches, they are fuckin great theyve really up my seeds come up in the cold north of england

thats what happened to me too but heat got mine

how are they now?

Buggered - I watered them yesterday but I don't know if the leaves will recover and no leaves = no plant surely?

One or two have survived but because I've never done this before I don't know if I was watering too much or too little or if it was something else

There's no heating on at home and they've been out of their plastic bags for a couple of weeks :(

they are quite resiliant little things so don't give up hope just yet - if their stems are still thick then you'll be OK :) if they have gone all thin and weedy then they're beyond hope (which is what happened to mine - the capillaries give up too much)

as for watering they should be damp but not wet, if your house isn't heated you don't need to water too often but if its in direct sunlight you need to keep an eye on them

I've had to re-sow nearly everything and its hacked me right off - its supposed to be fucking warm and sunny now

can you takea piccy?

If you're away again when they're still in pots, someone gave me a tip once, bung em in tghe bath/sink with really soaked newspaper underneath...might work for a couple of days away hopefully

i've just sown from seed staight outside this year...only spring onions and beetroot so far, and hey presto...the cats, when they go out, have changed their habits of a lifetime (one is a kitten so i can forgive one is nearly 19 so  ) and started using those potting troughs as toilets

Ok - more in the saga.

Some of the "dead" tomatoes now seem to be sprouting little leaves that look more like leaves are supposed to. Can it be that the baby leaves had to drop off and then the proper one come through??

I'm still nervous about watering now. Do I water everyday? Must the soil always be moist?

I still lost 5/6ths of my tomato crop dammit :(

no they shouldn't drop their first leaves but as long as you can see true leaves who cares :D:D:D

they can be resiliant little critters

as for watering, the soil needs to be damp but not soggy, if they are in direct sun they will dry out faster, they don't like being dry but they don't like soggy feet either

every day is a bit too often for this time of year I think but it totally depends on where you have them and what its like - there isn't a hard and fast rule about it :)

The little dead leaves don't necessarily drop off but they aren't proper leaves - they're what the seed becomes.

Tomatoes need a lot of water. But wait until the soil feels dry to the touch before you water them - that way you won't overdo it. Don't wait until they start to wilt - that will stress the plant and make it more susceptible to disease.

Once it gets bigger, you're going to have to water every day :)

Got to plant out some of mine tonight. Then see about some support poles or something for the beans.

the tomatoes just don't seem to be doing anything though, those first 'leaves' ahve appeared, and they have just been sitting like that for a couple of weeks.

toggle - its cos of the weather

not enough heat and light at the same time to get them going

mine are just the same

would moving them onto a south facing windowsil in a warm room help?

thing is the beans and peas and french beans are shooting up, apart from the one bean my daughter pulled up

yeah definately :) move them where its warm :) though they might start to grow towards the light, if so just turn the pots daily :)

my chilli seeds are the worse/slowest :(

the sunflowers have gone mad :D

mine aren't, the chillis are firmly still in first leave stage with no signs of changing either

the aubergine I planted 4weeks ago hasn't shifted a mm for 2 weeks now

oh yeah, I just got given a load of salady stuff and some broad beans and some herbs to play with as well. No idea how old they are or whether they will work, but they wer free, so it's worth a try.

I've got corriander, rocket and basil here.

only thing I won't be planting is the carrots. I don't have anywhere to put them this year.

Thanks aqua/Trashpony.

I need to get at least one plant to maturity - it's not about the fruit anymore - it's about one woman, against nature  ;)

Chillis aren't moving - 2 little pointy leaves and they just sit there, looking at me. The Teddy Bear sunflowers are doing ok though - I would not label them as "mad" yet mind. The Russian Mammoth shot up to about 7 inches and then died - I think he tired himself out.....

he died?

I have 2 seeds left now we've planted mine, I'll get them down to you :) I've been wondering what to do with them!

the chillis are very pointy, thats what they're like, they need warmth, something we're sadly lacking so far this year

That would be grand :)

I did get attached to them and now I'm a little afraid of the buggers, so delicately balanced are their ways.

I take it personally when things die on me. I lie awake, knowing I've killed. It's not a nice feeling :(
