What's Rugger Bugger?

The more braying sort of middle-class white kid.. says 'ya', plays rugger, likes Clapham, doesn't do many drugs, drinks lots of beer, gets a bit 'feely' with the girls when he's had a few.. went to private school, has a comedy accent that's easy to mock without him noticing. Likes wearing chinos, deck shoes and 'rugger' shirts. Thinks All Bar One and Smollensky's are cool.

As for 'yuppies' - I really don't see that many in Brixton to be honest, I don't go to places like Living or SW9 and I don't often happen upon them on the mean streets.

We'lkl just have to agree to disagree then, I've met plenty of yuppies in Brixton, but hardly any in Balham, but like yourself I dont go to their hangouts.

And I'd rather a rugger bugger than a slumming it rich kid patronising the locals in brixton any day tbh.

I don't think there's any 'slumming it' element to living in Brixton? Brixton might be a bit rough around the edges, but the infrastructure is pretty solid and is far from a slum. It's of the same stock, if not higher, than most places in London.

I've met plenty of rich kids who moved to Brixton because they thought they were slumming it, its the whole vibrant and edgy thing.

I used to play rugby...however I don't think I'm especially posh.

As for Streatham, I think it's alright. There are some nice neighbourhood type restaurants on the High Road, and some good charity shops (although this probably isn't high on Filters tick list)

I do however, like reading these threads, and keeping abreast of which areas Filter is interested in...

Crusties, trustafarians, New age blow backers... All these freaks flock to brixton, co's its soooo crucial...

Everyday a new kid on the block gets knocked.
Coming from Seven oaks in a pair of lemon cords & a tie died v neck..
Smoking hi grade paid for by his dead nan.. damn.........
Wearing ethopian flags like there BoB marleys Dad...
Brixton is the Bomb, son.. Brixton Is the Bomb.......

so did i. one doesn't have to play rugby to be a rugger bugger, and one doesn't have to be a rugger bugger if one plays rugby

OMG!!

But that's you to a t filter? ;)

I's prefer Brixton over Streatham what about Loughborough Junction or Angell area I bet they're fairly cheap non?

What Dub said.

Pootle: Currently Acre Lane and Handforth Road nr Oval tube are looking good. Well, Acre Lane itself doesn't look very good, but the house does.

Yeah, but rough as fuck. I want reasonably priced (less than £800 if poss, wanna save), not too rough, good transport links, close to central Brixton. There are properties like that in the area, just not loads!

except Balham doesn't have any of those kind of chain bars and I can't remember ever having seem anyone in chinos, deck shoes and a rugby shirt.

Your definition of a rugger bugger is sound - but I withdraw my support of it applying to balham.

balham - middle class young professionals who are a bit rough around the edges. The girls are a bit overweight and the blokes don't wear designer.

The backroom media types - VT editors and sound recordists rather than actual meeja types.

Your having a luahg aint ya! Balham is nowehre near as expensive as Brixton, just look at a few house price websites.

And when it comes to yuppies Brixton beats Balham hands down.
I do admit, for all i love streatham, balham (tho pricey to me) would be fine if they just closed the bloody Bedford - Ok pubs and shops and a tube
I'd say brixton's more yer alt-yuppie (barleys)

Balham is in the catchment area for some very good schools, which pushes the price up round there.

Top tip for Brixton Hillites -when the Victoria line is suspended between Victoria and Brixton, take the overground train to Streatham Hill and take an empty northbound bus.
BUS??? walk it you lazy bastards!

Yeah, I never accused Streatham of being yuppified, I used to live there.

I'v eonly ever been to the Bedford once, seemed okay (it was on a weeknight). Its a big old place, apprently they have bands and comedy nights at the weekends?

Must have been the chip on my shoulder from growing up in Henley in full effect when having visited Balham in the past then!

they are. But then so's Brighton, by that argument.

And if one were at the farthest end of Streatham Hill and needed to go to the farthest end of Brixton Hill, that's quite a way, regardless of the fact that they meet in the middle.
