Streatham

less "Hoxton-Barley" than brixton - there are young professional types aplenty, but not so achingly polished and trendy as i've seen elsewhere.

think it's just a different type - more rugger bugger than Barley, perhaps, but i'm not sure i prefer that to be honest

Welcome to heaven Chris.

Don't know what everyone's whinging about - Streatham has great transport links.

Three stations and loadsa busses get you everywhere you want to go. Oh, and a big fuck-off London to Brighton Road.

The perfect place to live.

praps - that would make sense - my school/uni days were a bit rugger-bugger. I think i'm probably immune.:o

Unless they have changed it since I left there, Streatham Hill only has a half hourly service after 7pm and the last train is quite early at 11:30pm (ish) which can be a pain if you are in town in the evening.

Our beautiful crackhead free streets ;)

Its got less crime than a lot of areas, the transport links are top notch, theres bars etc if thats your thing, its very quick to get to places like Brixton etc if thats your bag.

Less crime than Brixton for sure, but so what? So have plenty places (well, OK, most if we're honest folks).

Transport top notch? You've got the same overground as the rest of South London, and... the Northern Line. Now only in the most warped mind could the Northern Line be considered "top notch". It is the worst line on the Tube, by far. It compares favourably to going into town on a fucking donkey or a goat but that is about it. You'd have to be a Papua New Guinean tribesman to be impressed.

Try not to get too upset Monkey, its only the internet :D

Less crime than Brixton or Streatham whioch were the two areas mentioned in the op. Surprisingly enough like most people (apart from young professionals looking for something 'vibrant' and 'edgy') I prefer living in areas where I'm less likely to be robbed or burgled.

The Northern Line can certainly get you to more places than the Victoria, and I cant think of many places in South London which have the tube and trains to Victoria, London Bridge etc etc.

 It's been a quarter hourly service until the last train for at least three years.

Although the last train is still at 23:38:mad:

Top tip for Brixton Hillites -when the Victoria line is suspended between Victoria and Brixton, take the overground train to Streatham Hill and take an empty northbound bus.

The thing with the victoria line is u can connect to all the other lines and it's double as quick n reliable than the northern line.
but at least u're happy!

Id disagree, you cant connect to more lines on the Victoria and it isnt quicker - it has far fewer stops - it used to be more reliable but Im not sure if thats as true now.

Invaluable tip  But how often do they go? More frequently than the Brixton service I hope

It's still more reliable. Northern Line has something like 3 times the rate of delays than any other line.

Its better than it was but it still has too many problems.

Not nearly as bad as when I lived in SE London and had Connex though:mad:

Streatham's ok. You got loud and dirty bits and quiet, leafy bits. Where I am is ok but developing a bit of a rep as a crack dealer area. Transport links work fine for me cos I don't have to travel far, go to S.Hill, change at CJ.. all good. But that bloody 417 bus does my head in  I wish they'd make it more frequent! Buses along the High Road are great (from the Hill bit). Lots of them, frequently.

Streatham plus points: Ice rink. Um...

Filter Man - Sunny Stockwell seems what you are after. A choice of lines and prices similar to St Reatham.

I wouldn't ever live anywhere that's reliant on Northern Line again. The very thought brings me out in a rash.

Re: what Dub said.. give me Nathan Barley over Rugger Bugger Julian any time.

Just don't like Balham, posh, boring, no life. Call me clichéd but I quite like 'edgy' if it means character, nightlife and things to do in close proximity. It's also more expensive than Brixton and at least another 20 mins commute.

Found a few more properties in Brixton, but Streatham an option.

balham is a bit gentrified - but not as much as herne hill or anywhere near as obnoxious as clapham can be. The nothern line is more useful, IMO than the victoria line - and you have overland too, which is insurance for when one or other goes up the spout, as you have in brixton.

Is Herne Hill gentrified though? Hasn't it always been 'gentry'? I love Herne Hill, it's got all the nice bits of posh life without any of the pretense and high prices. It just quietly goes about being pleasant.

depends on how you define gentrified. But I love herne hill too - i just don't feel that balham is quite so unrelentingly posh. but hey, you don't like balham - it's not a point i'm going to press.

except it being more expensive than brixton. if that's true things have changed massively in the last couple of years - we could never have afforded to live in brixton!

The clever people move to Balham or Tooting ;)

No,
The middle class univercity educated rich kids with silver spoons in their loud coked up mouth's, who belive that they are clever, move to Balham or Tooting.. was once a lovely area. Now its a cocaine & magners hell hole..

The clever folk live nowhere near London.

But your right about Streathams high road, winning worst high street 2002.
I love the south side of london.. its shit & dont we just No it..

Oh yeh! the annual Streatham kite festival is boss...........

Your having a luahg aint ya! Balham is nowehre near as expensive as Brixton, just look at a few house price websites.

And when it comes to yuppies Brixton beats Balham hands down.

So youve never actually been to either area then?

a findaproperty.com search for 1 bedroom flats between £700 and £850 raises pretty much identical results in terms of quality of offering. Factor in the extra cost of travel in zone 3 and Balham becomes more expensive. If time truelly is money, the 40 minutes lost a day in travel soon adds up ;)

I'm not down on Balham, pleasant enough area, just doesn't compare to Brixton imho. As for 'yuppies' - I really don't see that many in Brixton to be honest, I don't go to places like Living or SW9 and I don't often happen upon them on the mean streets.
