Strawberry Fair 2009

The fair seems to have got progressively busier over the years, with a load more 'laaaaads' getting very drunk.

Terrible. People getting drunk? I spose they were drinking that 'lager' too, were they?

What is the world coming to?

Well even the local residents enjoyed it this time:

In previous years, parking issues, anti-social behaviour and illegal camping have caused concern among residents.

But Dick Baxter, chairman of Friends of Midsummer Common, said: “It went superbly well for us. There were few people coming into the residential area and the traffic was stopped at the main road.

“We have finally got a tactic that actually works - turn the Brunswick area into a fortress.

“Other residents have been congratulating the police and we are well-pleased with the outcome.

“I also went along to the fair and enjoyed it.”

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said he had not been made aware of any major incidents at the event.

No major incidents? I'd say having to fell one of the huge periphery trees there at eleven at night was a bit of an incident. Certainly jolly thrilling watching a lone tree surgeon doing his work in the dark.

I missed the random chaos; from where we were it seemed one of the quieter SF's of memory - certainly a lot quieter than when they had a dance stage...

An interesting range of friends old and new - several unexpected urbs, including the Colchester posse :D - lovely beer, weather held up massively, decent food available for difficult veggies, and some excellent bands.

Which venue were you closing?

Funniest moment - Rich having to ring Stig because he got all lost & confused 10 yards away from where we were all sitting under the mahussive Woodforde's umbrella!! :D:D:D

I didn't see ANY urbanites at all, which is a little bit surprising, since I spent most of the afternoon sitting near the food stalls - I saw lots of other people I knew, and it seemed like a good place to sit, and let people come to me. :)

Mind you, I was driving, so not drinking - perhaps I would have bumped into folks in the beer tents?

There was a really lovely atmosphere there this year, met some lovely people, saw some great bands. That band called '10 Ton Tongue' were amazing. I nearly didn't go 'cos it looked like raining and my mates weren't going. It was one of the best ones I've been to yet, so glad I did!

I was in two minds, because it was pissing down when I left London, but the weather was perfect - not too hot, and so dry that the grass turned to dust, but not raining either :)

good pics Tort, you've got one of my mates there :D

we were on and off the fair til evening, didn't see any urbanites though...

after being mostly awake since the evening before, i wasn't seeing straight for a lot of the time anyway.

Shame to miss you foo, I PMed you yesterday.

We had a pretty good day overall, which the unexpectedly dry and pleasant weather on Saturday helped lots.

Except that the combination of crowds with a shortage of female toilets was a real downer for Deb :(

oh sorry William, i'm terrible at replying to pms. :)

i thought it was a lot less crowded than recent years tbh, and i didn't like those bloody fences all the way around the common - not just the old camping area either. did you notice them?

I had a good day. I didn't get randomly picked on by the Transport Police this year, although on the way back into the station in the evening an officer seemed to be trying to get me to trip over his uninterested sniffer dog. I met some Urbs - you know who you are. Here is a slideshow of my pictures:

Was a fantastic day! Just what I needed at the time too. Enjoyed the pics, you got me in one.
