Strange and interesting covers...

I thought Tom Jones owned 'You Look Good on the Dancefloor' at Glastonbury this year. Made me smile because he made it sound like it was written for him, and then I got an image of the Arctic Monkeys sitting there listening to Tom Jones, of all icons, cover their song. Sweet.

Did he also do this at Glastonbury , saw it at the crappy Diana tribute concert but hadnt realised he did it to a Glastonbury crowd , The Concert for Diana version was IMO trash .

Would love to see a link to the Glastonbury one and the crowds reaction or are you thinking of The Diana Concert.

All suggestions greatly received - found the senor cocnut stuff real easy too :D

Now to use that nifty youtude to normal file app for the Kronos quartet stuff :D:D

This thread is great, I particularly love the Nina Gordon cover, apologies for not having any of my own to add (save for searching for 'radio 1 live lounge' on Limewire, which unearths some predictable but slightly interesting tunes occasionally.)

I really love Cat Power's The covers record, she did some interesting things with the songs on their.

I saw some rockabilly band at Glastonbury this year doing a cover of the Spice Girls 'Wannabe', which was bizarre to say the least. No idea what they were called tho.:(

I was reminded over the weekend about an album by Hal Willner from ~20 years ago, called Stay Awake, which contains various artists covering Disney songs. The version of Heigh Ho by Tom Waits is a thing of rare beauty. There's a Buster Poindexter version of Castle in Spain as well which is affected and funny. Have to admit that some of the others haven't aged as well.

Discussions of Mr Ice Cube on another thread got me to thinking about the Nina Gordon folk cover of the first verse of 'Straight Outta Compton' (sounds briliant - this delicate little flower of a voice saying 'So when you're in the neighbourhood, you'd better duck cos ice Cube is crazy as fuck'), and artistes like Dick Cheese. Anyone got any reccs on genre crossing covers that manage to sound good AND bring a smile to the lips with the re-interpretation - such as 'hearing' the GIANT crooner smile Dick Cheese has on Aperitif For Destruction/'Welcome to the Jungle' singing the lines 'You know where you are? You're in the jungle baby, and you're gonna DIE!'

So, funny but good cross genre covers - I'll even go so far as to say Artic Monkey's cover of Love Machine...

Brilliant.

Love will tear us apart has been covered by just about everyone, but i think "The King" does it best.

Konki Duet's cover of Visage's Fade to Grey

M Ward's cover of Bowie's Let's Dance

Sand & Cake's cover of Bowie's Sound and Vision

The Balnescu Trio's covers of various Kraftwerk songs

Jose Gonzalez's cover of Kylie's Hand On Your Heart

Feist's cover of Nina Simone's See Line Woman and Sea Lion Woman

"Little" Jimmy Scott's cover of The Captain and Tenille's Love Will Keep Us Together (on Loung'a'palooza like the crooned Soungarden cover)

there is an unlikely country version of "We Will Rock You" on a Mu Ziq Allstars 12 inch, wierd as the rest of it is squelchy electronic covers of Eminem, MC Hammer and Craig David. they are all good but that country one is the one i listen to most.
