Stop oppressing gays in Sochi!

Flagstaff Arizona.

I just wanted to say Flagstaff Arizona. I once met someone from there.
I heard a story about Flagstaff once; as a matter of fact, I've heard a lot of stories in my time. They say a scene from Casablanca was filmed in the Hotel Monte Vista, Flagstaff.

I'm saying this because it's true

I haven't been to Flagstaff, but I have been to Phoenix Arizona, which is very flat and hot.

I have also been to Winslow Arizona where I did in fact stand on a corner probably at some point, but did not run down the road trying to loosen my load. That was the other guy.

There's an amazing hotel in Winslow called La Posada - http://www.laposada.org - which I can very much recommend.

The weirdest event that I've ever been to was just outside Phoenix. I went to a annual meet for archers and fencers. At night the parties included fire eating, belly dancing, drumming, etc. One party featured about 5 kegs, a candelabra, lit candles, and a foil. You were supposed to put out the candles with the foil after having numerous samples from the kegs. They had to airlift a few people out for medical attention, but it wasn't from that particular party.

There is something really weird going on with instrumentalising us gays for anti-Russian propaganda (see my favourite blogger fagburn for this). Arizona has strong anti gay laws and the original poster is a troll, that much is clear.

The map isn't completely accurate. A lot of cities have separate ordinances that ban discrimination in housing and employment so it isn't a solid block. Omaha has one such, and the place I live is working on one. That'll cover nearly half the population of the state. I know that's happening in other states too.

Where the map talks about being sacked for being gay - what jobs would that be talking about?

Nearly any business where the owner cared one way or the other. Most of the US has "at will" employment. They can fire you for any reason or none.

(I should also add that my state government is paying benefits for married same sex couples that were legally married elsewhere. You just can't get married here ... yet.)

Does that still include being black? Obviously they should have known a person was black before hiring them, but the boss could turn racist overnight...

No, there's a federal employment discrimination law that prevents that. There's a list of classes in the law that include race, national origin, religion, and sex that you can't fire someone for. Sexual orientation isn't on the list so its fair game.

If it only works in terms of being able to sack whoever you like except in a few particular instances, then it's just a matter of making up another reason.

Yep. It is.

(That's why you document anything that your employer says or does that reflects on your employment.)

The people who lie the most are nearly always the clumsiest at it, and they're easier to fool with lies than most people, too. You'd think they'd be on the look-out for lies, but they seem to be the very ones that will believe almost anything at all.

At our US office sometimes people just ...vanish.

Most of the time the employer won't comment on the reason to anyone other than the person they fired. They don't want a lawsuit. If you check references for that person, they'll only confirm when they were employed and if they'd hire them back. Nothing more.

Sometimes we get "X has left the company", and sometimes "We do not employ anyone by the name of X".

I'm always waiting for an email saying "X never existed".
