Stoke Newington - news and chat

There are about 7 or 8 different bus routes that go along Stoke Newington High Street to various destinations and it's only 10 minutes from Finsbury Park station on the 106 bus so it's not that difficult to get to.

However, it does depend where you are travelling from I suppose :hmm:

I've friends living in Stokey so I've spent a fair bit of time there of late. I've never found it that isolated. It's a pain it's not on the tube, but the overground trains are pretty frequent and loads of buses go through.

It's a bit trendy, but it has some excellent cafes (I particularly like the 24-hour bagel shop opposite the police station - hot salt beef bagels at 3am. ) and restaurants, a few decent pubs and some pretty good shops.

I live about 10 minutes walk from Stoke Newington, if I nip through Clissold park.

Clissold Park is great, there is an aviary, tame rabbits, and deer to look at.

you have to be a bit lazy to think Stoke Newington is isolated. If you can't walk or cycle 5 minutes then fair enough...for anyone else then it's as accessible as anywhere else....that is of course unless you are totally reliant on the tube.

It takes 15-20 minutes for me to walk to Finsbury Park for the tube.

less than 5 minutes to get to the train to Liverpool Street.

15 minutes to walk to the overgorund at Canonbury...

Loads of buses with easy access to pretyt much anywhere. I have also walked to Angel from Church Street wuthout too much bother.

Hackney is also one of the best boroughs for cycling around.

I really like living here, true it has got increasingly middle class and I generally avoid Church Street on the weekends now...Dalston is also heading that way but itself still a nice relaxed area with loads going on.

Indeed, it's fucking expensive for a place without the tube or a fucking supermarket.

For the time it takes to get to Stoke Newington it may as well be Stoke On Trent.

It's got a Morrisons...

Not going to argue its expensive though...but £900 a month...don't know where he is living but that is nowhere near an average...even for near Church Street...closer to Stamford Hill therer are plenty of places to be had for decent rent.

He's right by church st. he claims he pays so much because he wanted a fairly big garden, which to be fair is pretty nice.

I am literally 15 seconds walk off church street and my garden is about 35 metres...I pay £420 a month (which I think is alot personally) but that is for a 3 bed flat.

I think he may be being ripped off as I think I am paying alot for the area.

does anyone know what was going on around clissold park on wednesday night? loads of police and the chopper was up above the park

I'm about 10 mins walk from Stoke Newington and like it very much, despite it being a bit East Dulwich of the North.

It's worth moving that way for Rasa (the veggie one though) and the Z Cafe Bar alone.

There's a very shonky bike shop round that way too. AVOID, especially on a saturday when it gets even shonkier ;) :D

that fucking bike shop is a bit pile of poo. they're rubbish, useless, idiots, avoid at all costs, etc etc...

the spence bakery nearby is marvellous otoh, fresh gorge bread and buns and stuff, yum yum yum

Ooh. Wierdly, for a cake purveyor it's fallen under my radar.

Cheers Paulie! Will check it out tomorrow whilst I'm avoiding that bike shop

they also do nice cakes at the tea shop, and nice tea, tea shop is towards the top end - the town hall end :)

What what what? Tea Shop? YES! Are you talking top of Church Street or Stoke Newington High Street though?

I iz still getting my bearings.

top end, as i said, near the town hall, rather than the end near the high street

perfect place for pootle treats :)

this morning i did spot a new cafe on the high street, near the junction of high street/church st, called retro cafe :hmm: anyone been in there?

Ahh! I knows where you mean now and that's my end too!

Went in the Rose and Crown the other night too. V nice if a bit on the pricey side, but where isn't these days :(

rose and crown was taken over recently as the old guvnor retired - been taken over by some bright young things who installed more ales, yay :) but put the prices up too, grrrrr

anyway, i stick to the shaky these days, a far superior establishment

I like that place (the shaky) should pop along there more

i'm often to be found there perched on a bar stool. got a new ale in lately which has gone down well (seafarers i think its called) as well as draft aspalls cider which has been sending everyone loopy loo of late.

on a back street, far away from 3-wheel buggies (except on friday evenings when they swarm the pub, the fuckers )

I nearly went there last night :D

the retro bar, is basically a coffee shop, didn't look particularly retro on closer inspection, it does sell cakes though
