Stitch and bitch and Chutney making....

i'd vote for cranberry and something with apples in it. i can get lovelly cheap cooking apples of the farmers market here, so if we do need apples, i'll provide.

I reckon we'll manage 2 at the most - I'm voting

Cranberry chutney (if we can get cranberries - if not then apple and tomato :D )
mango chutney

let me know your strong feelings and we'll narrow it down - I'm a chutney slut so I'm quite happy to make anything really - just getting the ball rolling as it were.

Happy with those but also am voting for Onion chutney (marmalade?)

:)

Since you're asking for votes then I'd like onion chutney / marmalade and apple and tomato, although will happily make anything and can see the seasonal appeal of cranberry (they don't usually come cheap though).

I am happy to go along with the majority as per usual :)

ok -

onion marmalade and apple and tomato are favourites at the moment - bonus being that they are cheap and the marmalade doesn't take long either.

Cool do i need to bring my stockpot with me or do you have enough pans and stuff? Or should i just bring myself and some Honey vodka?

honey Vodka sounds mmmmm :)

remember we need to each bring empty/clean jam/sauce jars!

Yeah - I've managed to save 2.5 so far

(One's a bit on the small size....)

Do I need to boil the jars to sterilise them or am I being neurotic?

I think it's just you and the vodka we need, Shelley - we have a preserving pan coming off Ruby and a pan from Ms T if they are still available and we have things at our house we can use.

I am still coming and can provide a large pan if necessary. :)

To sterilise the jars you need to wash them with soapy water, then pop them in the oven on a low temperature to heat up. You do this just before you put the chutney in them -- no point in doing it now.

I've made onion marmalade before and it was way too vinegary, so I'd be interested in having another go. It's particulary nice if you use red onions, imho.

I've already made pear chutney this year (domestic godess, you see), so I shall bring some of that along with some nice cheese to eat it with.

It's a relishy thing to have with cheese and cold meats etc, typically made from tomatoes and/or fruit, cooked with sugar and vinegar to preserve it.

Cool ok will bring jars, me and Honey vodka which is supposed to be drunk with warm milk (like a hot toddy type thing) but i quite like it as a shot :)

Its all sounds like its going to be lush :)

That sounds like the LUSHEST thing in the world - like a white russian crossed with traditional cold medicine or something. We have a microwave too so heating the milk will be dead easy.

I'm getting more excited about the vodka than the chutney now...

I'd like onion marmalade too... and happy with whatever else.. as long as I get plenty of the honey vodka and warm milk! :)

I also have a massive pot if needs be.

Ahh fucking arse monkeys   i have double booked myself somewhere else ladies, but even if i cant make it i will drop off a bottle of the voddie because i have a couple more at home.

*grumbles about diaries*

I'm supposed to be studying today!

So instead, I've sewn up one baby jumper, one handbag and I'm looking for the other unfinished baby jumper - which has disappeared somewhere  !

It's like when I was a student before.. flat was always cleanest when there was actual essays to be written! :D

Sorry Mistress Chutney maker :( :( blame onket he made me choose :(

Do you still want the booze? Cos i can still drop you off a bottle, its no bother :)

Well the booze sounds lovely but you don't have to bring a whole bottle of vodka round to something you can't attend, it seems a costly payment for liking Onket more than us (but I have seen his photo on the mugshot thread so I'll let you off ;) ).

We might do another if it's a success - bring your voddy to that one :)
If it's a disaster we won't speak of it.....

You know how we were talking about sloe gin. A girl on another board I post on was talking about these truffles she made with sloe gin.. here's her recipe.. along with some sloe gin making tips! The recipe sounds AMAZING and the tips look good too! I'm not sure how long sloe gin needs to "sloeify for" before you can use it for this recipe though... as I'd like to make some for Christmas gifts if possible....?!?

200g proper plain choccie (G&B's?) at least 70% cocoa solids
1 pkt silken tofu, or double cream if you like; (if you can't get silken tofu use ordinary tofu mixed with a little soya milk and strained through a sieve)
1/2 a cup (that's half, not one or two!) maple syrup
1 cup almonds and/or hazlenuts
some sloe gin (some for sipping, some for the recipe) or other liqueur

Put maple syrup in a pan and bring to the boil
Add nuts and stir constantly until syrup is almost dry
Empty onto greaseproof paper and allow to cool. Make into a parcel and bang with a rolling pin to make a coarse mixture.
Melt choccie and stir in nut mixture and a few drops of sloe gin (if you have any left!)
Fold in tofu (or whipped cream). Cover and refrigerate. Form into small balls, roll in grated chocolate and allow to set.
Tip for your sloe gin, instead of pricking the sloes - a laborious job - stick them in the freezer for a day or two and when you defrost them they'll split easily, which is what you need to flavour your gin.

Phoar, that all sounds lovely- unfortunately haven't got time to read everything properly, but I'm still coming! (it's very easy though to be triple-booked that night what with bluestreak's dj-thing, and the N by NW drinks! )

What about the ingredients, are we all bringing a tomato each or are a couple of people getting everything and we put money in? (sorry if that's been covered before, and I didn't see).?

Well no one's really pushed for anything else so I think we are making onion marmalade and apple and tomato chutney. (is that ok w everyone? The Christmas chutneys looked much more interesting but more complicated and I don't want us to be there until Christmas grating burbleberries and refining nutmeg etc.)

Ingredients Onion marmalade:

1 kg (2lbs) onions
2 tbsp oil
5 tbsp red wine vinegar
100g (4oz) sugar (brown is nice)
Variations: add mustard, tomato puree or Cumberland sauce. Red onions are even better.

Ingredients apple and tomato chutney:

1 onion, skinned and finely chopped
1 lb. (450g) sultanas
1 lb. (450g) apples, cut small
1 lb. (450g) tomatoes, skinned and chopped
1 pint (570ml) vinegar
half a teaspoon of ground ginger
half a teaspoon of pepper
1lb. (450g) Demarara sugar

Now I have no idea how much those measurements will make but since there are going to be about 10 of us shall we double up to make sure we have enough for everyone to take some home? Or is that a stupidly large amount?

I'm prepared to get all the ingredients and just tot it up and share the cost out when you all turn up but I need definite numbers cos if folk drop out we may have a mountain of chutney to get rid of! (Although it will make good gifts).

I'll send a pm out asking for confirmation - I'm away until monday now so will get back to you all then with final numbers.

I'll also try and see if I can get some jars off Callie - no good not having anything to put it in :D

I'm very happy to come away with lots and lots... I'm present collecting at the moment.

Going sloe picking at the weekend to make sloe gin so I can make those truffles too. :)
