stinky bins

I live in a flat, have no access to the garden and nowhere to put my stinky bin bags :(

A couple of times, we've forgotten to take the bags out on collection day and had 5/6 bags in the flat for a whole week,... 'orrible.

Any suggestions? I don't think it would go down too well if we just whacked them outside on the communal landing bit..

bokashi

Give it a good sprinkle with some bicarbonate of soda. That should help soak up the remaining nasty niff.

Also make sure you clean the lid too

I killed loads of maggots in my food waste bin yesterday - bleurgh. Boiled a kettle and poured the water all over them. Now that was a stink.

Was feeling particularly mean as they are also in my wormery and I think they've probably killed all the worms :(

gentlegreen - presumably you can use any old bucket with a tap on for that and just buy the bran? :hmm:

The buckets they're selling as bokashi buckets specifically, are stupidly expensive!

That was just about the most useless thread possible for you to have highlighted! :hmm:  :D

Anyway, I reckon I might snap up a couple of fermentation buckets and give that a go! Composting your cooked food/dairy/meat etc etc waste as well as the bog standard stuff is very appealing - and it'd only be replacing the existing compost bucket too. Cheers for that gg! :)

Hmmm that actually looks quite interesting. I thought I couldn't have a compost bin because of mice, but if I can find the space maybe I can rethink :hmm:

Pip - that's another reason the brewers buckets would come in handy too, cos you could buy two of the smaller five or ten litre ones instead of having to have great big 20 litre jobbys when you're very unlikely to fill that size in two weeks anyway, so you wouldn't need much space!

Yes, meat!

But yeah - that bucket is basically just a fermentation bucket (is that what they're called? :hmm: ) but with a massive price hike!
They do sensibly suggest having two buckets because once one is full, it takes two further weeks to turn into usable compost, so you just rotate the two (but you could stick the composting one out on your balcony).

This one looks quite dinky, and I don't have much food waste really. http://www.bokashibucket.co.uk/

So you can put cooked food in there? What about meat?

We love using our bokashi buckets, we simply scrape all the leftover food straight off our plates. Meat, gravy, vegetables - even the remains of our apple crumble. It all goes in with a handful of bokashi bran sprinkled on the top. We recommended this fabulous system to anyone.

Meat is fine for the compost bin too - raw or cooked.

Though doubtless there will be the odd idiot council who will send around the compost inspector.

bin freshener spray and scented bin bags ffs, what next, arse fresheners? turd spray to make your poo smell nicer? or how about make-up for poop, that makes it look more like an attractive floral arrangement rather than a pile of excrement?

just clean it regularly with bleach and boiling water, problem solved

5 or 6 bags? Why don't you get a decent bin big enough so you only need to put out one bag on collection day? Are you one of those people who put out rubbish in carrier bags or summat?

I have a team of helpers this morning cleaning out my jars ready for next week's collection :-
