Stew - what's in yours?

ooh, yeah, forgot to mention dumplings...my mum gave me a good dumpling recipe...it's divine in a lamb stew....basically sweat finely chopped leeks in butter, let them cool completely, and then mix in with your usual dumpling recipe....

i just made one with peppers, chili, kidney beans, lentils, potatoes, red pickled pepper, carrot and quinoa. flavoured with lots of mustard and smoked paprika

The word 'quinoa' sounds like something that only a skinny, vegan health freak who actually looks unhealthy, would eat :(

What do you put in your veggie stew Herbsman? My boyfriend hates mushrooms and I aways found them dead important in a stew:(

Chestnuts are  in a veggie stew. With mushrooms or with tomatoes and root vege.

HMMMM.

more ways to convince himself that he actually likes leeks.

My stews are generally made up of whatever meat needs to be used and whatever veg I have that goes with that meat, shoved in a slow cooker first thing in the morning, ready to eat about 10 hours later. They tend to be a 'use up bits before they go off' sorta dish rather than an actual planned meal.

we're very into stew at the moment. (aka drained slug stoo) usually make a big pot of it on sundays, cooked on the world's smallest crappest camp-stove. it's always got spuds, carrots, onions and lidl salami in it. other things that have been in it include broccoli, parsnips, sweet potato, beetroot, orange drink, pineapple and coconut juice, special brew, tequila and malibu-esque stuff.

it was all good except the special brew. i fucking hate beer

Nope, I cut all the veggies, bung in the mince, and then the stock, and stew it - no frying involved

Try it.

Simply brown the mince on a high heat in a different pan for a short time before adding to the rest of the recipie. As well as leaving quite a bit of fat in the browning pan, the texture & flavour of the mince in the final dish will be so much better.

Stewed/boiled mince is utterly disgusting IME & good mince is a staple where I'm from. :)
