It already existed before appropriated by the Japanese Riot Police. Bit like Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do it used to be unified to a certain exent but someone wanted to concentrate on the harder elements, developed it and then politics got involved...
(look out for a book called Angry White Pyjamas - skinny white guy goes and trains in Yoshinkan in Japan to rather amusing effect).
There's something I like about those old 80s and early 90s action films. They're so silly, and he's definitely more po-faced than Schwarzenegger or Van Damme so he's the funniest of the lot IMO. Plus I love the names of his characters- Nico Toscani, Gino Felino...
