just watching steptoe now - fucking hell it's well grim for a comedy - harold's basically having a nervous breakdown after suffering from night terrors and attacking his dad with a meat cleaver. he's now at a shrink and recalling a childhood of abuse and neglect and then how his father ruined his only chances at happiness. corbett's rage and disappointment is incredibly well acted.

Steptoe did have a miles better theme though even without the classic porridge intro

i really never found Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads funny.

Didn't they have a feature length film the narrative of which was them trying to avoid hearing the football results; the 'denoument' being that the game was cancelled?

also, one of them looks like Genesis P Orridge.

but for the record, i'd find it a near impossible choice to make choice. love S+S but would perhaps have to go for Porridge, if only for the Fulton Mckay factor - if a puppy would be thrown off a bridge if i didn't make a choice.

Steptoe was groundbreaking, the BBC weren't sure whether to even broadcast it as it was about such dingy, lower-class people. Never excelled in terms of pathos. Plus I'm sure half the gags seen in sitcoms since were 1st used there.
