Stephen Fry and linux

I am *so* losing faith in U75. I had hoped that the "racism" meme wouldn't filter through to this part of the board...

Well I think you and tarranau need to explain what leap of logic compelled a major computer company to release a promotional picture of two people squinting at the tiny screen of their new product. It would be a pretty peculiar thing to do, wouldn't it?

To me, they just look like oriental people looking at it.

I'm actually a bit gutted. After Chymaera's BNP ditty, obvious lies and no action, this place has gone a bit toothless lately.

Gutted tbh. I think I've had enough of tolerating shit from obvious racists like this.

You could always put us on ignore.

If it makes you feel any better, absolutely no offence was intended. I don't suspect it will, though.

;)

Why. It's two people looking at a small computer screen, perhaps in bright sunlight.

Asus isn't exactly none for its strong marketing, brand positioning and customer segmentation is it? Your irrelevant bibble doesn't cover or excuse your pathetic stereotyping and dismissive racism.

It hasnt, just ignore the idiots and read what you came for....

Thing is, it gets to the point where I can get better informed opinions elsewhere. (Mr Fry's blog being a prime example). Why should I bother with U75...?

Stephne Fry's Guardian column about computers and other digital technology devices is on the web as a blog the first edition of which is here: http://stephenfry.com/blog/?p=22

In this he introduces the reader to his point of view and experience of such matters. It is witty and fun to read. Typical is a sentence near the end of the first blog:
If I had a grain of rice for every minute I have spent watching a progress bar over the years, I would be able to make you all a bowl of kedgeree.

I've reported Untethered's post. I wouldn't if it had been another poster, as it could easily have just been a mis0judged comment, but given his track record the last couple of days I think it's bang out.

In response to his question, yes, it does look like they are squinting, it's an unfortunate result of the angle of the faces. I think it's a bit of an oversight on Asus' marketing departments behalf.

Why should it be incumbent on others to ignore arseholes and posts like this?

I wouldn't tolerate liars and racsts like this in the flesh. It fucks me off to be expected to turn the other cheek and let it go on the boards, allowing folks to spout shit like this unchallenged.

So no-one at Asus at any time said, "Hey, let's drop the squinting couple. It doesn't put our product in a good light?"

It shouldnt be, but much like real life - the oaf who seeks attention only gets it if its given to him. Its my feeling that many rude, obnoxious and ignorant posters here get off on the attention they receive.

Challenge I agree, but my post was directed at jaed who expressed

I've seen stunning blond models staring longingly at Cisco stuff. Does that mean that all Cisco users are stunning blond models...

Do the blond models put Cisco's products in a bad light? Do they highlight a potential shortcoming of the products that might be a concern to potential buyers?

And you meaning is...? TBH assuming a target market of a product, based on one shot is pointless and misleading...

They probably thought 'happy seniors' - that'll show our product in a good, accessible light.

What they almost certainly didn't do is think 'bloody oriental people, they've all got squinty eyes and they're ruining our promotional image'

Where are Asus made again?

Given the warming I've just received from editor, I can no longer discuss this matter with reference to any example that might help without getting into further trouble.

So we'll just have to go back to talking about the merits of the Eee PC rather than the marketing photos.

As I said to Jaed, I really can't discuss this further.

You can. Just avoid the racist stereotypes, dodgy logic and cunty grandstanding generalisations and you'll be ok. That's probably a bit much for you admittedly. Most people can actually open their mouth without sounding like a superannuated racist pillock divorced from modern realiity.

Have you finished yet?

Why not...? Just avoid anying racist/sexist and you'll be fine. Everyone else does it. But it seems you don't know why the comment was racist. Which is worrying...

That's correct. You are no longer at liberty to post up offensive racist stereotypes.

If that's proving too much for you, I suggest you leave this thread and let people get on with the topic under discussion.

I can assure you that I've never been in any doubt about that point.

At the moment, the topic for discussion seems to be some people acting out their revenge fantasies on "evil racists", much as I have attempted to steer it back on topic.

Bollocks. I can't see any revenge fantasies on here. Yoiur ability to misrepresent the thread, lie and obfuscate really has reached new levels.

You haven't tried to get this thread back onto the subject in any way. People were rightfully dismissive of your pathetic excuse that 'So no-one at Asus at any time said, "Hey, let's drop the squinting couple. It doesn't put our product in a good light?"and your entire lack of contrition for saying the stupid racist stereotype in the first place.
