Staying safe at free parties.

I know this has probably been argued over enough in the past, but I don't see how anyone can blame ket for making the squat party scene dangerous- sure, peopel on K can be a danger to themselves and make themselves vulnerable to bad things, and I'd definitely say that bunch of pale-faced silent immobile kids aren't adding much to the vibe, I've never felt threatened by someone on K at a party, whereas the crack-heads are, on the whole, a much much more serious danger to people and property.
I understand an argument that K is "ruining" the scene in terms of upful vibes, but how that relates to arseholes fighting and mugging is utterly beyond me.

Certainly, over the last few years I've been increasingly put off going to squat parties by the accumulation of bad experiences, but the last 3 I've been to have been fine. You do have to keep your wits about you, but that's true of many high streets of a Friday/Saturday night, and a fair number of nightspots.

It's shit though, it's a party scene and it should be carefree and libertine. Sadly that could never have lasted, I guess the moment you generate a lawless space some cunts are going to use that to be shit to others. GRRR

Fucking right.

nah you can't blame drugs- a number of the biggest trouble makers are complete k heads.. and a lot of the mugging cunts don't even take drugs...

I was blaming the goblins for making parties unsafe.. just shit. Although you could argue that they're mugger bait.. fuck knows if I was a mugger I'd target the human slugs first.. easy pickings.

I should add that I've got no problem with sensible k usage.. it's not like I'm a stranger to it, I mean the kids that go to parties just to spaz out in a k hole all night.

"Human Slugs"- LOL-orama! :D
I agree about the kids that just rock up to a party snort loads of K and fall over dribbling for the rest of the night, but at least they're having a good time (after a fashion) and not hurting anyone... It's shit though, I have lost a few (any would be too many) friends to that 'scene' :(

too true.

I was wankered on MDMA at a freeparty, talking to some chavs (first mistake) chatting about the drugs i was on. They had this friendly act on asking me if it was good, and if it was on me. I said that it was in my wallet, which my mate had. Once they realised I had no wallet, drugs or phone they turned nasty and I narrowly avoided a kicking. Only on the comedown did I realise that I would have been beaten up and mugged if I would have had any stuff on me. :(

I've never had any trouble.. I wonder if its just people feeling unsafe rather than experiencing hassle.

maybe something in that, but i've felt unsafe and had hassle on different occasions. I once walked in on the aftermath of a stabbing, luckily I was off my tiny mind on acid at the time i walked around looking for "the sandiwch machine" as 4 dodgy geezer types stood ther wondering what to do with me. I walked out in an apparent confused state, got outthe door and didn't go back in. i saw several people with that "fuck, err, what the fuck" look on their face as they walked out of that room :(

Spoke to a guy at a different party,he said he saw the incident, apparently someone ripped someone off and they did them in the loo. So it wasn't my mind playing tricks on me. Even since then,I've been a bit para at free parties, never felt really safe at one from then on. Too many dark corners for dark people to hang around in. like a fucking spiders web.

I don't have any problems with the Ket Statue dance floors if they want to do that it is fine by me and they aren't the ones who are thinking about mugging people.

I'm much happier at parties which are short on dark corners.

EDIT: On second thoughts this may not be entirely true as I've seen inside some amazing buildings but it is best to go exploring after the sun has come up.

EDIT Again: I see that the top part of my post will be causing deja vu for people who read the thread :o

My last 2 experiences of London squat parties have been fucking horrible.

I went to one after the Cannabis Festival in Brockwell Park in 2004, it was in Brixton, can't quite remember where exactly, maybe near Denmark Hill. Anyway there was a court yard outside and loads of people where sitting outside when the sun was out.

I remember seeing this big guy charging across the courtyard out of the corner of my eye, fucking hell I thought to myself, I wouldn't want to get in his way! I then watched as he charged towards a female friend of mine and smashed her in the face sending her about 8 feet backwards. Everyone I was with was in absolute shock, it turns out that he thought that my friend was being rude to his girlfriend, who was actually trying to start a fight/mug my mate. Anyway things started to get really nasty, cos out of nowhere loads of blokes with extendable batons and bits of shrapnel attacking what looked like random people, we all fucking got out of there quicktime, but my mate had to have a metal plate put in her mouth!

The very last squat party I went to was NYE 2004 in Bermondsey, it was fucking shit, filled with wankers, we ended up there by mistake as all our mates had gone to a headfuk party in Hackney after the Wang/Haywire night and that's where we thought we where going, except the guy in the taxi who we where with, got the wrong directions and gave them to the cabbie.
I remember as me and my girlfriend where leaving, there where loads of what looked like 15/16 year olds bottling this traveller type guy and where kicking him in on the ground. We literally had to step over this to leave the party, it was a fucking disgrace.

ketamine, crack, shit techno, no effort put into the environment, flooded loos. Lets face it - most squat parties are shit. I think some people like them 'cos they get a frisson of "urban edginess" from it all.

Well I was at Acre Lane after J-Day and Chambers Street NYE '04 and both those were pretty rough parties. Both those parties were massively advertised, easy to get to, had no door security and lots and lots of crack heads.

Neither is typical of the sort of parties which I go to two or three times a month and indeed if it were I wouldn't be going.

Blagsta can stick his Urban edgy up his arse as well. Sometime it is good to walk into a well decorated building where loads of effort has gone into that but to be honest I'm often just as happy with a big wall of speakers, a couple of moving heads and some really good techno.

And we have the "back in the day" crew going on about how much better techno was when they were kids and how much they hate gabba you sound like my grandparents talking about Rock 'n' Roll or my father complaining about how much Opera has gone down hill since who ever it was left the National.

Which parties do you go to these days then? The smaller ones with door security? Not huge fuck off multi riggers filled with mugger scum.

It's true though.. even the acid techno was still quite innovative a few years back.

I wouldn't go anywhere near a squat party for decent tunes, but each to their own, we all like different things.

We started using door security at the Citric parties in Brum 7ish years ago to try and keep out the troublemakers. Mostly works too.

I haven't been out paryting for over a year, but last great party I went to was in a mansion house in Sussex. £20 for the weekend, including camping, 3 soundsytems, loads of DJ's, live acts, great music (house, electro, punk-funk and proper (funky) techno, dub, funk), loads of effort and lovely lovely vibes. Thats the sort of thing I'd rather go to - safe, loads of effort and smiley happy party people. Thats what squat parties used to be like "back in the day". Its sad to see the scene become what it has. Some of you don't know what you're missing.

Disjunkt, Tribe of Munt, KSS just off the top of my head (and they often team up with other rigs like loophole, Iffy, FRU) all running good parties with decent door security. The Malfaiteurs are a little more variable but there is a big regular crowd out with them and while there are some people who I know as mugger scum from Manik they tend not to fuck around to much.

The first 10,00 flyers are now printed to raise awareness of this issue at parties, clubs and Teknivals all over England, Europe and worldwide.

Please help and donate to the cause, and if you would like some flyers sent to you PM me with your address and please donate a small amount for postage, which will be greatly appreciated as the kitty is now empty !

I intend to print a further 70,000 flyers in 4 different languages to send this message as far worldwide as possible - The link to make a donation is :

I will continue to fight for the love of the scene and everybodys' right to party in a safe atmosphere where there is no fear.
thanks to all those who contributed - keep it up and spread the word

play safe - stay safe x

still alot of the kss/disjunkt etc are pretty much word of mouth, check the partyline type events which reduce alot of the general riff raff showing up, i also think some of the parties they have put on have a serious lack of decent lighting for the type of building, i.e. canning town.

I think personally at the moment that just some speakers in a room doesnt always do it for me these days, i want a party where a can walk around and be able to chat to people and dance then get away from the music for a bit but still feel safe etc etc... think im gonna mostly stick to outdoor parties this summer, i have felt a bit bored aside from being unsafe at some recent squat events.

Word. Outdoor parties piss all over anything in a warehouse for me. I don't find them threatening either, you can just walk away if you are outside.

Crack has ruined the scene I used to love.

Fuck all crack dealers, hope they all get stabbed.
