Starship Troopers-on now

D'ya know (and i may be going out on a limb here and sound like a simpleton) but i've never really much gone in for delving into the life and thoughts irl of the authors of books i like......

if i like 'em, i like 'em............don't think i'm particulary subliminaly influenced and i have had a lot of enjoyment from authors denounced on here as being politically dodgy...

or maybe i'm a bit wishy washy ?

I agree. It's like the rumours that Arthur C Clarke was a kiddy fiddler.

I still enjoyed Childhood's End. Although I didn't know the fiddler bit when I read the book.

But now I think about it, that title........

Well yes, i was a little sad when those rumours came out..................but it doesn't change the fact that i enjoyed his books !

I recall his philosophy. You might want to reread it yourself, to disabuse yourself of the errors you made the first time through.

Yes Johnny, you've made it clear that you grew out of science fiction before. Well done for you.

But I haven't, and re-reading childhood sci fi favorites is a nostalgia trip I did last year. Covered all the greats of my childhood, fiction and non. Aldiss and Zelzany still shine, asimov and arthur, less so but still great with a short story. Heinlen and E E Doc Smith stood out as utter cunts creating might is right facist sci fi landscapes.

Johnny, I'd dig that box of books from the attic. But you wouldn't agree even if I provided the most obviouse of examples.

Yes, I read all of them too. You can't compare Heinlein with EE Doc Smith.

Never cared for E E Doc Smith...........have a soft spot for ole Azimov though...got some really old copies too !

I have never 'grown out' of my love for sci-fi.....it's one of the joys of my life and my only one true escape and relaxation !

Of course miss. I didn't not enjoy the stuff, I mean asimov and all golden age skify is riddled with un PC stuff. But the ideas and the quality of the writing carry it.

Just because I enjoy the writing doesn't mean I have to endorse the politics of the writer.

Well yes !

Dali moved to the US when WW2 started. After he moved back to spain, his work lacked the impact of the earlier pieces.

Well he moved after it started, and when he came back he was quite comfortable in Franco's Spain. Disagree with the latter, especially considering the "Dali Theater Museum" in Figueres.

Have to say i never took ST to be anything other than a satire on totalitarianism etc........

Yep me too, it just looks so obvious it's a pisstake. I remember years ago talking to a mates brother and him saying he thought it was great that Hollywood was finally taking his politics seriously and showing it respect (he was a rightwing), he really thought the film was a homage to patriotic people etc...:rolleyes:

The film is a clear pisstake, the source material was not satirical

Having not actually read it i will stay out of this argument !

you'll be telling me Captain Picard is a fascistic war monger next !

naw Picard is a cultured gent from a society that works on the principle of enlightened self interest. Glactic do gooder hippy types who show teeth when necesary.

*sighs with relief*

As a side note my first ever sci-fi/fantasy book that i bought myself (had been introduced to Azimov by my then step father) cost 25p !

what brand new? never!

My first sci fi book I still have, a battered copy of the brilliant Aldiss novel Helliconia Spring.

Mine was Phoenix In Obsidian - M Moorcock........bought in a snack shop on the Norfolk Broads (family holiday) in 1976 and i was 13 !

Never looked back.....an obsession was born !

I have never gotten rid of any of my books.....only lost when persuaded to lend out and then never returned

Heh, I feel your pain. I have a 'only lend what I am willing to go without' book policy these days.

If the usurper of my copy of Dune Messiah could please give me it back, I would have more lending goodwill

A lot of mine are out of print now too !

Yes the person who still has Player Of Games.....i know who you are and i know you still have it !

Kunsthaus1.jpg

The only thing uglier is Soviet architecture.

Chinese architecture (the stuff which proliferates the country, not the rare examples of traditional Chinese building) knocks that into next week on the ugliness front, I'm afraid.

He could be termed as guilty of gunboat diplomacy though:eek:

You know, when you park a massive gunship next to a city and say 'hey lets talk peace'

Earl Grey, Hot.
