Star Trek XI

Apparently the plot has
Old Spock travelling back in time to gad about with the young Enterprise crew, which changes the timelines so that Old Star Trek didn't happen as we remember it. Freeing them to spin the new versions of Kirk and Spock into exciting retro-flavoured adventures without worrying about a horde of Trekkies going, "That contradicts The Tholian Web".

Ahhh. See that might work.

Oh dear, sounds like Next Generation all over again...why can't they ever do anything truly brave with the franchise? Other shows manage it, hell they make a good following out of doing that (Lost killing off major characters for instance)...?

Yup, a federation under Dominion occupation or something would be cool.

True. But if they're gonna re-boot the franchise with a changed storyline, that may be the best way to go about it.

I do wish they could've gone back to the DS9 era, the storylines there were far more interesting than everything else the Trek franchise has come up with before or since then IMO.

I'm not convinced it is (granted this is all speculation given its not even shot yet!), it's just this smacks of the usual "We're going to do amazing new things but we're too scared to be really brave so lets use something familiar to make it easy". Just like the crappy way they ended Enterprise with an appearance from fucking Ryker...

Grow some fucking balls [Paramount] and do something new ffs; in this day and age (of BSG, Lost, Heroes etc) you really are setting yourself up for a fall with this type of backward story telling.

Actually that doesn't sound too shabby - could be interesting.

I'd be all for more DS9 style storylines - that was my favourite franchise as I liked the story arcs and the slightly darker tone.

Though that episode where Dr. Bashir gets people to sing is one of the worst things I think I have ever set my eyes upon :o

Isnt this being done by jj abraams ( sp ? ) the bloke behind lost ? if so then there is the slightest bit of hope

So far I haven't liked a single thing he's been associated with, especially that televisual prick tease Lost. :(

Snip...DS9 and Voyager took things forward but, to be honest, I think Enterprise was one spin off too far. And it had a shit theme tune
Booo to you! Big buggering boo!

I dont think it was given enough of a chance, it got terminated just after it got interesting. I liked Archer but I really didnt like his crew.

Some of the stand alone episodes were dodgy- the Wrath of Khan/ Limahl haircuts of the GM Klingons were particular highlight, but the entire Xindi storyline was great.

Re- the theme tune, I thought it worked well with the title sequence which in itself was fantastic- truly evocative... our thirst for discovery, quest for knowledge and how far we've come. /pofaced!

Did they? Oh dear! :D

I'm glad I never started watching that now.
It seemed a bit rushed and desperate and jarred horribly, especially as the episodes running up to the end were cracking.

I would leave it for another 10 or 15 years then look at it again but rather than go back to Kirk, Spock or before I'd prefer to then see it go forward like TNG did.
I would leave it for 40 or 50 years and then "revive" it so that all those folks in the middle part of this century think its brand new :p

Sorry :o :) I quite liked Archer too but found the crew were a bit limp and the same with a lot of the storylines.

I've got to admit the title sequence was good and certainly the images were evocative - it was just that terrible song!

Mind you I love DS9 and my husband - who is a big Voyager fan - thinks I'm insane :)

When I saw the thread title I thought it was going to be about choosing an all time star trek football team... :D

Now there's a thought...:D

And you'd get to shout "Who ate all the pies" at Jonathan "Fatty" Frakes!

If I was playing against a Star Trek team I'd just break Wesley Crusher's legs.

Imagine If they played the cast of Andromeda. Whoopi Goldberg would get the equaliser just before half time, then the game would be called of when Kevin Sorbo gets caught knocking boots with Beverly Crusher by an irate Picard

I work with a major Star Trek gnerd guy who is convinced this new film is the precursor to re-making some of the original Star Trek series episodes but with better special effects (and acting). I thought he was nuts but he explained that this would be a way to get a new generation of people into the entire Star Trek world and regenerate viewing and sales of the 'later' franchises.

One needs to remember the 14-18 age demographic generates huge amounts of entertainment revenue and by the time this film and any subsequent TOS remakes are released this age group would not have a clue who Jean Luc Picard is but may be interested after being led into the Star Trek world via the 'new Kirk and Spock'.
