stabbing ?? shooting ?? Brixton Hill (2nd Oct 2008)

Bit tragic to lurk for 3 years and then post all of your words on one subject though, isn't it?

Abnormal behaviour really, verging on suspicious one-trick pony. Your 'awoken from a dream' stance seems to have taken some time to come to.

Been here since '74 btw. I don't recognise your parody of the place.

I've lived here for about 17 years. Are some people in Brixton really unaware of the high crime rate here? It IS worse than some other parts of London. There are some great things about Brixton, the community, the liviness, the different sorts of people who live here and so on. But the fact is there are a lot of murders here, a lot of drugs and an awful lot of burglaries and muggings (oh yes..and the occasional riots). The sort of things that tend to go along with an area with a lot of poverty.

Oh, those little mini riots that most people have forgotten about? :D

I liked that someone broke into the carpet store in Brixton Water Lane and carpeted the road outside.

I like to think of them as the Great Brixton Carpet Riots.

Fuck the police..carpet the streets!!!

and Joy's the Florist. They probably went home and gave them to their mum saying "honest, I wasn't involved mum" :D

and proof that they can't have been locals, raiding Poison Albert's and running up Brixton Hill eating his saveloys :D

It was 95 by the way

...and a tad more than just McD's windows being smashed.

It was 95 because my son was just a baby. I watched them brick in the job centre from my window...and watched the smoke billowing down the road from the carpet shop.

My mum phoned me up and said she was just going to the end of the road to take a look. I sent my ex partner out to find her and make her go home. Apparently the pair of them ended up being chased up Acre Lane by the police.

A lot of buildings were burnt out...but it wasn't as bad as the riots back in the 80s.

Yes, definitely 95. I was out on the piss and cycled home about 2 in the morning (don't remember crossing the river...oops) wondering why the timber yard was smoking, then gradually noticing burned out cars etc. Rioters had all gone home. Didn't have a telly at the time but found out what had happened on the World Service when I got in.

GREAT - some one who HAS ACTUALLY lived in brixton for a reasonable amount of time and who recognises that it is horrid and violent. Anyone finally worked out why they have shut the tube early eh ?! its a tactic to stop the demand...

Like the tube's the only way to get to Brixton. Oh, and demand for what? Are people travelling and queueing up to get mugged here now? As if drug tourists weren't bad enough, now we have stabbing tourists too...

LOL. I'm not convinced by the tube conspiracy. But perhaps the people who post here aren't of the right age to be affected so much by the crime here? My mum has been burgled loads of time. One time the burglar sat on her bed and talked to her.

A lot of the stabbings are teenagers on teenagers. Does anyone remember the shooting in McDonalds not that long ago? That was teenagers. If I didn't have a teenage son I wouldn't be half as worried about the crime as I am. I am sure many parents here have the same concerns that I do. You wouldn't believe the crap that kids have to put up with in this neighbourhood. Perhaps people think that somehow that crime doesn't count?

I certainly want to leave before something (even worse) happens to my sons.
