stabbing ?? shooting ?? Brixton Hill (2nd Oct 2008)

i think isitme does have a point

i moved to brixton in 1993 and moved out in 2006 so had a good run. It still seems to attract wronguns and there seems to be a stabbing / shooting every week. I am glad to have moved away it is too negative. It is a real shame beacse the people are generally wonderful and the vibe is good.

i dont swap veg's with my neighbours but then i dont have to see an eternal amount of yellow boards or messed up kids selling weed on a daily basis. If you take a step back and leave the area for a bit ( i did for two and a half years ) you will realsie that what isitme is saying really isnt far from the truth !!!!

It's horses for courses, isn't it. If you don't like it you don't like it, and if you do, you do.

The bad reaction to isitme's post was because it was made from a position of ignorance. And because he said "why don't you do something about it or move away". Which was a silly thing to say.

You know, after thirty+ years here I'm still largely unbothered by crime. Only two loose acquaintances of mine, both not the most snow white of characters, have ever been involved in yellow board incidents involving knives or guns. A couple of unfortunate muggings for friends, but generally I've been safe since a nipper.

I'm not saying that crime's overstated - vehicle crime in particular seems endemic in our stretch of roads - but very little's affected me or those close to me in Brixton really. I've actually suffered more booze-based attacks when I've been working elsewhere.

It's easy to get carried away with the reputation of the place and get sucked into fleshing out all those yellow board incident spots in your mind. But it's a also a busy place with a disproportionate number of chaotic users and alcoholics boosting the crime numbers disproportionately, often amongst themselves. Aside from a couple of nearly deserted stretches I feel safe here at all hours - I've often felt more threatened walking through more booze fuelled provincial cities at closing time if I'm honest.

It's also a terminus on a busy tube line and generally very well connected transport wise. a lot of people pass through Brixton that you don't get in other parts of London or small shithole towns.

I spend most of my time in Brixton or King's Cross.

Although there might be a high number of stabbings or shootings, you hardly ever see fights in pubs or clubs.

When I venture out to suburbia, I am always amazed at how easily it all kicks off.

I prefer spending time where I don't have to worry about the 'You looking at my bird' mentality.

Mind you King's Cross is going downhill fast. Too many suited & booted...;)

Precisely. I was always told that you only find trouble in Brixton if you go looking for it. So there are shootings etc, but very rarely is an innocent bystander caught up in it. Whereas Friday/Saturday night in Brixton always feels very safe - no pissed up lads picking on people because they look a little bit different. I feel a lot safer here than I do when I venture out of town.

"not all towns are small shithole towns"

I hate to say it but having been out tonite , brixton is for sure a toilet.

why bother trying to pretend its anything else better ? you just simply cant polish a turd ! Sure it has a 'vibe' but i'd prefer to go find it any where else. Rough street dealers , dirty streets. Hhhhmm , really appealing. A small whatever town sound preferable as it goes................................... comments on a postcard ...............!

I agree. If you want a really gruesome vibe, try Croydon.

So you prefer town centres with young pissed up lads looking for a fight, and where the girls aren't much better?

....er... , no i dont prefer those type of town centres.

Its not quite as black and white as that, is it really now ? Not all town centres have young pissed up lads / girls. Very few have what makes brixton so 'special'

special needs more like !

You're not making a huge amount of sense. What was your experience of Brixton, and what didn't you like about it?

Ya rly. So you've signed up to this site just to contribute on this one thread and tell us how dreadfully shit Brixton is - yet you still can't stop yourself going there for a night out?

It's human nature to a certain extent, but I always wonder what folks do with the information. If there's was a serial killer with a set MO stalking the streets there'd be a point, but otherwise it seems kind of surplus and slightly in bad taste.

Yeah - maybe the bbc news and all the newspapers should stop telling us what's happening in the world too - whats the point in knowing anything about anything?

brixton is a shit hole, that's what attracts a lot of middle class twats looking for somewhere to live that's a bit edgey.

not entirely, no i don't think so. i've heard many people try to tell me how brixton is such a 'cool' place to live

When I tell people I live in Brixton they just look as if they feel sorry for me, which tends to reflect the distorted view most people have that Brixton is the Gaza Strip of South London.

After nearly 16 years here I can honestly say I faced more anger, aggresion and violence on a housing estate in Basingstoke.

That's not say to Brixton's not a dangerous place if that's what you want to go looking for.

Watch out by St Mathews Place my son was mugged and there. Two teenagers both white about 17-19 one on a bike one on foot. simba

Quite
*insert Radio 4 emoticon here*

Apart from our neighbour who has come out at us with a carving knife and smashed our window throwing stones trying to get my flatmates to turn the music down. :D

Leafy and quiet most of the time :D

Yes, well your square isn't quite as genteel as my street. It is nice though.

dear editor,

have you just left college and have not awoken from the dream that brixton is lovely & wonderful ? - seems that way with your childish remarks. ...

for your info , I moved to brixton in 1993 , before the likes of the dogstar opened - so , i could say i have a fairly good understanding of the area.

lived near the acadamy on stansfield and gateley roads , the lambert rd on the hill , josephine avenue too. As well as a place near loughborough junction. Saw the riots in ? 94 .

Yourself ??

Pleaaaaase. Take a walk down Coldharbour tomorrow night and ask for a bloke called Garry. Then tell him your thoughts on Brixton.

Either that or get on a plane tonight to Mumbai and check into the Taj Mahal under the name of T. Blair. Do the the world a favour you surplus chunk of meat. Leave.
