On a schoolgirl tip, I read a Mallory Towers book when I was about 10, but at the same time I also had a Ronald Searle book with loads of St Trinian's stuff in it. But my favourite cartoon in the Searle book was this lift operator with his chauffeur's style hat on and stuff who's just opened the lift door to find himself surrounded by all manner of pointy chinned orrible demons with pitchforks (and iirc nakid women) and smoke and flames everywhere saying 'blimey, that's what the bottom button's for, then'. It made me laugh and laugh and laugh.

I was 9 years old or so at the time, and going to Mass every week, which probably added a certain frisson to it all. I also thought there was something indefinably cool about schoolgirls with machine guns smoking fags.

Thanks for that. I really like his spindly, pointy style with sarcastic approach to facial expressions. Also remember him doing a very good droll bowler-hatted sourpussed city gent with bogbrushy tache. Marvellous.

He is mentioned in Russell Braddons memoir of POW life 'the naked island'; which should put you off all sorts of things and is very well worth reading.
