Well, yes, cardiff have been known to be quite vocal, as well as quite drunk.
To be honest, i know very little about St Pauli and my aim in starting this thread was to find out a bit more. I am intrigued by the concept of left wing militantly anti-fascist footy fans with punk leanings. The thread has gone in a slightly different direction than i thought it would but by i have by accident learnt something.
Drunken 'anarcho' crusties is not ideal, but surely better than sober neo nazis!
In order to share my own experience with you. Firstly its not a choice between crustys and Nazis. Most young SP fans are antifascists, often politicalluy active outside football as well, but increasingly few are punks. IME young punks SP fans aren't regular attendees at games and when it is more for the party drinking reputation then the political one. The yound active political fans are growing in strenght and nuimber, nut are turning against the punk stereotype, and there are two reasons for this.
-Firstly the lefty punk days of st pauli were about a decade ago, and it was also typified by british style support back then (which was considered by many st pauli fans to be the best support in europe)- singing at certain times of the game, not many flags, and no drums etc. There was also more links with british clubs because of this. With worsening atmosphere at St Pauli games however, it led to the inevitable setting up of singing sections and finally the grouping Ultra' Sankt Pauli, who as you can guess take their lead from Italy rather then the UK and as a result the British punk thing is seen as a bit outdated by younger active Ultra orientated fans.
-Secondly the fame of St Pauli and its position in the party and red light district and the connection to punk attracted as I have described a load of alcoholic 'partygoers' to St pauli games. And I dont mean drunken fans having a good time. I mean actual people that look ike they have a serious alcohol problem and need help, in their mid 40's. Now this isn't a great problem as far as im concerned except when they do stuff that really shows up the club. Example:
After an away game in Leverkusen we were on the train back to Cologne for the carnival. Some aging alcoholic 'Pauli fans' from cologne were in the same carriage and singing, so far so good, until the train stops at dusseldorf and one of them (showing his actual allegiance to 1FC Cologne) bellows in the face of a 20 something commuter gorl with obviously no interest in football, but getting off at Dusseldorf so obviously fair game in the idiots eyes, "shit fortuna, shit fotuna, shit fortuna dusseldorf" covering her in alcohol laced phlegm. He does all this in st pauli gear. So SP gets a bad reputation through multiple stuff like this of being a club of alcoholic wankers rather then left wing actual fans.
This gets on the young actual fans' goat and so the tendency of the young active left supporter is now towards Ultra and against punk and even alcohol with many ultras just smoking weed, or even being straight edge. You'd still be accepted if you were a punk obviously and many are, just as long as youre not an idiot with it and care about the club, support and game.
There thats all the help you'll get from me.
The tanks someone referred to were probably these armoured cars at the Dresden game following the promotion on the penultimate game of 2006/2007 season. St Pauli fans like to have a ruck when ity comes to the fash but it doesnt really require this type of armour, the police just like to overegg whatever is going on to earn overtime, justify budgets, justify fan/left wing repression, paint st pauli fans in a bad light and play with their new toys:
