They're quite endearing but there is something twee and whimsical about them that grates - a bit like Smoke magazine

So Tough was part of the soundtrack to my carefree happy druggie days.

I never leave the house without a St Etienne song or two on my phone.

Triple nay. They might have been vaguely alright once but the inspired pile of wanky twee tosh they served up at the Big Chill about five years ago was unforgivable. Awful stuff.

:D
'Foxbase Alpha' was the album for me and i adored their version of 'Only love can break your heart'

Yeah, that was pretty good as an LP, but everything since has been dull.

And she cannot sing live for shit. At least a semi-tone out of tune for most of her high bits, and I've seen them three times, she was awful every single time.

I love Only Love Will Break You Heart - foisted repeatedly on me by an ex and I know no more of their output.
For some reason they inspire anger in me and an overwhelming sadness that I am too young to have experienced the 80s/90s Summer of Love.

Some of their stuff is virtually perfect pop music. I never tire of hearing Only Love Can Break Your Heart.

I once bought a 70s St Etienne replica shirt but it was too small for me.

oh god - was that them. I hate that record.

Yep, although they had the good sense to change their name to Cola Boy (

) for that one.

Heh. That's wank :D I hate that wafty kind of dance music - It's a Fine Day tune being another example. I wanted to smack her baldy head.

I didn't like only love will break your heart but did enjoy the second single (when they were going to have a different singer for each single). From then on I have dipped in and out of them.

I did the sound for them once and they were really really nice which is so unlike almost every band ever when you are doing sound for them.

They were pretty big at the time so I was amazed when they were not cunts (eveyone else I did that day was a cunt, Ian Brown was my favorate because he had not even got on his train in Manchester as we went to record in Brixton. No wait. Moby. He is the biggest cunt. What a cunt. I wish he had missed his train.). For that they will forever hold a place in my heart.

I'm genuinely shocked :D

i thought you'd have hated them :D

I think they managed 3 singers for the first 3 singles, then it settled on Cracknell (unless Filthy counts, in which case it's 4 singers)
