Squatting in London?

shez said:
Plenty of opportunities for squatting in Southwark right now.

They're slowly emptying out quite a few estates for demolition. And because they're fucking useless at everything else they're not quite on the ball when it comes to evicting squatters.

When they start clearing out the Aylesbury there'll be loads of potential squats.
and loads of potential squatters.

some councils are getting shit hot

When i was squatting in barnet the council decided that all squatting cases should be rushed through and in shoreditch it was mega quick.

All in all we moved 10 times in 7/8 months (one of those was a move in under 24 hours thanks to a gangster and some real threats)

Lucky i have managed to find the cheepest rent in london and have been settled for 4 months after 2 long years of moving around.

Out of our original group of about 23 only about 6 are still squatting all the rest of us have managed to sort ourselves out some way or another

Some people see squatting as a way of life, i really only seen it as a way of surviving until i got back on me feet.

It has deffinatly taught me so very valauable life skills but i wouldn't choose to go back to it unless i really had to. Im just thankful that when i was on the verge of been homeless i had friends who took me in and showed me another way of existing in London

The Return of the Last Gang in Town (Clash biography)

Just reading about the experiences of the then Woody Mellor (later Joe Strummer) on his return to London from Wales around 1973/74.

There were whole communities/streets of squatters then, up in Elgin Avenue/Maida Hill areas .... and many other places ....

from my experience at the moment squatting for living isn't too hard. I have friends who've been in a couple of places well over a year now. squatting for parties is a different matter. Luxuray flats, concrete blocks, and cutting olff the electricity to buildings have made finding partyable venues very very difficult in London.
