Squatting in Brixton

Creating an 'exclusive' community goes against the very community spirit of which Mrs Magpie speaks, in which everybody pulls together to hep each other...

I don't think questioning whether it's appropriate to introduce yourself with "hiya! Can I have a rent free flat between these dates, ta xxx" post is creating an exclusive community :D

And FWIW actually there aren't enough squats to go round.

Urban is a community and an incredibly supportive one at that.

Have a read of your OP and think about how it comes across.

Why do you need a squat?

Why in Brixton? Why not Hackney or Brighton or Scunthorpe?

Why not stay where you are or stay with friends?

Why feel the need to mention that you are going to the jungle in Madagascar? how is this relevant to your needs?

We're generally happy to help someone in need, but we are neither a charity nor a provider of free lackeys to anyone that rocks up.

If you want to be part of a community, it's usually a good idea to give something first.

Let's put this in context: a lot of long term local squatters find it difficult to find suitable properties in Brixton and surrounds. Equally some of the most prominent squats have suffered heavy-handed mass evictions of late, with a number of others threatened with similar actions in the near future.

Put against that someone expecting to breeze in and get given a free place with no previous contact, largely because they've spunked all their money on a monkey wanking trip to Madagascar, and it seems more than a little cheeky. I know it's mainly naivety, but you can surely understand why it gets backs up.

I just want to add that if you do a search for squat Brixton, or Brixton Squat on Goggle. This website comes up Trumps with a celebration of squats in brixton.
So I'd of though to any one wanting to Squat in brixton, This site & forum would seem like a pretty natural start point.

This thread is funny, In 2009 one would seem to need credentials to be accepted as a Brixton squatter.
Not credentials - just a sense of not coming over as a totally self interested arse and treating the squatting community like some sort of free hotel resource for world travellers.

Erm Capitalized Irony cos of bad grammer.

I'm finding it amusing that if you look up squatting & Brixton you get to this site.

So for me, Personally.. The idea of an individual asking on the forum of this here site, if there was any chance of maybe finding a room in a squat in Brixton & then being ridiculed for being a freeloader very ironic indeed..

I guess my idea of ironic is ill placed in this community so I'll hang my head in shame.

Erm... I don't see much ridiculing of squatters on here. What I do see is people who come across as selfish or obnoxious being put right. Like quimmy said, maybe she needs to have a little think about how she comes across.
Kara babes, hope you develop some self awareness on your holiday.
Peace.

I'm just not getting any of that from Kara's posts. She seemed very polite to me. :hmm:

I don't see why any of you give a fuck tbh. She needs a room, she's asked for one. Shy bairns get nowt.

I'm sure anyone who DID have a room in a squat to give up would make the decision themselves.
How do they normally get filled - probably by someone asking for a room I expect, like this person has

I don't get this thread

A lot of vitriol and judgemental attitudes towards someone who wasn't offensive, perhaps a little naive, who admitted they didn't know how to go about finding a squat.

:(
