Show me a form of socialism that isn't strident, authoritarian, racist, or doomed to failiure and I may go back. So far I haven't found one.

Don't be stupid - he can call himself what he likes on the Council so he could use SWP.
"Independent Socialist" is definitely not a valid description he can use in council elections either, unless he registers it with the Electoral Commission. The SWP know this as their 'principled left wing' members did exactly this in Tower Hamlets, before they put their careers before politics and joined the Tories and New Labour. Left Alternative/Left List/Left Party are valid descriptions he can use both on the council, or in elections even if his two fellow SWP members who stood last May failed to get their nomination forms correctly endorsed.
I don't think the majority of his electorate have any idea he is in the SWP - they think he is still with Galloway, and he likes to keep it that way as it means more votes.

Now his two election victories have been under two different names, "Socialist Alliance Against the War", and then "Respect". For whatever reason the man has had to run under different labels, not least because of the demise of both "Socialist Alliance" and, kind of, "Respect".
At the 2008 local elections in Preston, almost all post-Respect candidates had no description at all, not even "independent". One could say Michael has progressed from this position by at least giving himself a name
In 2009, Preston will have County Council elections. I wonder if a) he will stand, and b) what label he will use.
Under the Registration of Political Parties Act, "independent socialist" is not - iirc - permitted.

I think the logic goes (and bare with me here, it is MENTAL). People (ordinary, everyday, stuffing their faces watching telly people) watch television. Galloway was on television once. The ordinary, every day, shop at Iceland people the SWP want voting for them will go "Shit son! Galloway, television, I like television, I must vote SWP!!!!1111!!!!". This is the only thing I can take from F_G's post.
Lavalette was elected as a Socialist Alliance Cllr then as a Respect Cllr on the basis of campaigning support from other local Socialists not in the SWP. He campaigned on a broad left platform not as a revolutionary socialist. Therefore its entirely right that he register as either Left Alternative or Independent Socialist which encompass this breadth in a way that SWP registration would not. From what I can see Lavalette is a hard working and principled socialist Cllr, to attack him as a 'squalid little liar' is pretty disgraceful. We should be supporting people like him and out campaigning for more such Cllrs.

As the group secretary of an opportunist political party (LibDems) on the council that has seen at least a dozen games of musical chairs between your party and others in recent years - only in the last couple of months two members joined the Conservatives - it is hardly surprising that you should not care what people call themselves when standing for election or once they are on the council!
To do anything otherwise would be to expose your party and its representatives as the opportunistic idiots they are.
The majority of people however vote for parties, not individuals, and do get understandably concerned when they defect to another party or tell porkies about who they represent.
Sad that some people on the Left still look for any well known leftie no matter how flawed as some mind of messiah figure.
RESPECT and Left alternative or whatever they are called are largely irrelevant. Politically the left seem happy with this which is really quite sad.

re rees tho, as soon as i saw the he'd gone, i did come on here and thought 'thats the only thread in which it can be being talked about. but you've got to know that there's something to look for first, and i doubt that many people got the same email on a PR list

Oh, how the mighty (and not so mighty but would give their right arm to be, in Rees' case) are fallen. Where will the mighty Rees and German go, seeing as they seem to be among the most despised 'leaders' on the far left?
On a more serious note, I doubt this will change the internal culture of the SWP much, if at all. IMHO, Rees is getting what he deserves but is also being used as the sacrificial lamb for the failure of RESPECT. If the entire SWP Central Committee were to accept collective responsibility, then do the decent thing and fall on their political swords I might hold out some faint hope that the SWP could be rehabilitated, but what I reckon is far, far more likely is that a few scapegoats will be sacrificed and things will go on much as before.
