Spurs 2005-6 thread: The Road to Europe !

Nae money, nae cable/satellite - but fookin' unreasonably excited about Davids' debut. On a broadband connection, can anyone point me somewhere good for video/audio/live updates?

Mido to score after coming on as a sub 2nd half.

Well that's gone half wrong already as Mido The Yido started.

Wahey, Defoe just opened the scoring on 49 minutes. Pretty good 5 Live reckon too.

I'll have to MOT my crystal ball. :D

Defoe's sounds good though. Looking forward to MOTD. Couple more'd be nice. :)

Yeah, you're right. Although maybe we don't want to fully expose our fortes with big games against Chelski and the like coming up. But yeah, another would be good.

Good win yesterday....particularly liked the "One Mrs Parlour...there's only one Mrs Parlour!" chant....Nice to see Davids get stuck in right from the start. Early days, but a really good buzz at the Lane this weekend. :)

Even if you ain't a Spur, surely everyone wants to see Edgar The Pitbull rip seven shades of shit out of Robbie Savage on Wednesday night.

To be fair, Rob Styles knocked out Savage and he's soooooo weedy

Can't help but feel Spurs are way too overexcited by Davids arrival, clearly been starved of any big players

Very good vibe yesterday. Performance was okay but Boro aren't pushovers and had it not been for Defoe's strike, anything could have happened.

Davids was really excellent in the first 45 and then, like several, got a little lost when Jol told them to sit back after the first goal. Still very worried by Jol . . .

My MoM was probably Carrick.

Also liked the "Only one Mrs Parlour . . . " - did that come across on TV ?

Probably not going to Blackburn, but can't wait for Chelski next Saturday - a top of the table clash !

You might be right, for the last few years we havent really had any big'uns, I also think its to do with having a very young and talented squad now with a leader in the shape of Davids to help them along...

Its great

I've heard it described as possibly having the Bergkamp effect; big-name player comes and other big-names players start to think we might be worth joining. And to be honest, while I'm glad about Davids coming I'm also dead excited about Stalteri, Tainio, Dawson, Huddlestone and Mido.

I think Davids is unusually important for a couple of reasons:

1) Everyone seems to instinctively understand he's exactly the right person, in the right position for this season. It's just the perfect fit for everyone concerned.

2) He's symbolic of the re-emergence of Spurs.

There's a very long way to go, but his arrival is a big indication that we are firmly on the right road.

btw, all 3,000 tickets for Blackburn away this Wednesday night are sold out. However - if there are any northern Spurs tempted - at least 1,000 will be available to away fans on the night.

COYS !

If Levy got him for £7 mill, I'm almost embarrassed. But not quite. Fantastic potential.

Going to be a very busy day indeed. Edman's gone and the South Korean has arrived. More out on long-term loan, more still to come in and others still to leave . . .

Going to be a late night . . .

.

And thats all he'll ever be. He's had one average season followed by 2 very poor seasons. Even Faye performed better than him this season.

Maybe he has got potential but looking back I'm more than happy to take the reported £9m on Newcastles' official site for him and run.

The acquisition of Jenas continues Spurs cunning ploy to buy every midfielder in the Premiership in order to bemuse teams with the new 1-8-1 formation

Busy busy busy...

The Poland international joins Teemu Tainio, Paul Stalteri, Tom Huddlestone, Wayne Routledge, Aaron Lennon, Edgar Davids, Jermaine Jenas and Lee Young-Pyo in joining the...

Not quite sure the "hard working target-man" fits into that company, and with, Keane, Mido, Defoe and the apparantly highly-rated Mounir el Hamdaoui, what exactly is the point?

If the Jolfather wants him there must be a good reason.......... lets wait and see

Received wisdom is suggesting we let Kanoute go becasue a deal had been done with Feyenoord for Kuyt, but Feyenoord then decided to try and shaft Levy on the price once we were exposed.

Oh dear.

So this Polish bloke from Derby is primarily a stop-gap, though if he turns out to be top 6 and 20 goals a season, no one will complain.

Btw, taking everything into account, Spurs are almost dead even on this transfer window, which is pretty wonderful given the talent thats come in.

Of the three newcomers it's Lee I most like. PSV have done very well in the European Cup recently and this boy did get to the World Cup semis. He can also apparently cross very well too so maybe he'll be overlapping Andy 5-bellies Reid as well. Cheap as chips too.

I hope Zeigler gets a good season under his belt in Hamburg because I really liked the look of him last year.

Edited to add; I though we did really well on Saturday considering we were playing 10 against 12 for most of the game. Aaron Lennon looked quick as fuck when he came on.

Yes, very positive despite the result; players were really putting everything into it, the fans were, umm . . uncompromising throughout.

Lennon did well given the oppo and the size of the occasion.

Lots of good things to take from the game.

vs. Rafa next, at the Lane. Just a shame we're not playing them after they've had a midweeker in Europe. Can't wait for Jenas' surging runs at their central defenders . . .

Unless the Jolfather decides to go with Carrick and Davids in the centre of the park to spread the play and take the bite out of Gerrard and Alonso.

I've just had a vision...

Jol gets Jenas to finally live up to his potential, grooming him over the season into a 15m+ player. In the close season, Chelsea bid for Jenas, and a deal is done for Scott Parker plus cash. Parker, playing for the club he supports, becomes captain and a WHL legend.

[/swirly cloud effect]

Parker would be a Spurs player now but for his insistence on £55,000 a week.

Just not possible when your crowds are 36,000 and you've been in Europe once in a decade.

Then how come you can afford Davids and were (if memory serves) linked with Figo?

I think we weighed up the players and decided that Davids and Figo were slightly better and more worth the money than Parker.

On our central midfield against Liverpool, we might start with Carrick and Davids and then unleash Jenas or even Lennon to run at them when they're a bit tired. I think we have to play Davids tactically because at his age and at the rate he plays the game he's going to run himself out.

Players like Davids and Figo - because of their status - can be accommodated within the existing club wage structure differently and without causing agro with the other players agents.

For example, the way Levy got around breaking the wage structure with Davids was to pay him a 'signing on' fee of around £1.5 million, excpet it's paid weekly - effectively no diff between wages and a signing on fee as far as Davids was concerned, but the wage structure could still be defended:

"We had to pay a big signing on fee, and we can get that back anyway through image rights . . . "

It's basically the same money as Parker but paid differenly so the agents of the top three earners (Robinson, Defoe and King) aren't all asking for £20,000 a week more - which was the indirect consequence of signing Parker.

I'm not a Spurs fan but I do like the look of the signings they've made. I think they were unlucky against Chelski - I don't think they can win the Premiership but if Mr Jol can keep the players happy with his rotational policy a Champions League place is a definite possibility & probably a place above the Arse into the bargain - and I say that as someone who is a great admirer of the way Arsenal play.
