Spurs 06/07

I suppose when I think back to 15-18 months ago when qualifying for Europe was the height of our ambition, a second season in 5th place – together with 21 Cup matches, including trips to Turkey and Portugal and Spain – is pretty fine. Our erstwhile fellow mediocrity of two seasons ago (like Newcastle, Villa, Citeh, etc) must surely envy our progression.

The strangest stat for me is that there are 116 teams in the top 5 league in England and of those five divisions only Accrington Stanley managed fewer clean sheets, and yet we’re 5th in the Prem! We might actually be dangerous with a defence.

Fwiw, I think this season clarified for me the challenge we face; for me it comes down to a 10-12 week period beginning at the end of January, this is when the FA Cup has kicked in and the European comps have started up again. If we’re serious about competing in all 4 competitions, we have to put out proper, competitive starting 11’s on the pitch – with genuine options on the bench – every 3-4 days, for the whole of that mad 10-12 week period. And win the friggin games, not take the lead and be found out because we’re at bare bones again - bloody centre backs at left back, or central midfielders at right back of left wing, knackered, half -injured all over the show. We were scraping the barrel too often.

All about the quality of the squad for me; yes to more kids, but it’s about time Levy actually spent proper money - he's not spent a penny NET in the past 2 years - rather than sit back looking at his share price going though another roof.

Another strange, yet on the whole satisfying and enjoyable season...

I thought the reason for our success last year was going out the cups at an early stage and not being in Europe. IMO this left us fresh for the league and gave us our best finish in years..

However, this year we finish in fifth AGAIN despite a monster schedule of cup games:)

A definite improvement in the (traditional tottenham) style of play:cool: , more goals, more ambition and..........Dimitar Berbatov:D  . On the downside, as LC and others have noted, a very leaky defence (this despite individually being very good). Not really replaced Carrick yet. Hudd's season went a bit flat even before his injury and Zokora is clearly a different type of player, albiet one who has belatedly started to impress me.

So, over the summer then - some genuine left sided players please. 12 months ago Downing and Bridge would have been nice but seems we've got little to no hope of landing them. Perhaps a creative, passing centre midfielder...ooh and a fourth striker once Mido has been offed. Getting a bit greedy now eh?

More than any new signings though I just hope we can keep hold of Mr Berbatov - PLEASE

Fwiw, I think talk of Berbatov leaving this summer is entirely media driven, with the occasional assist from SAF who never misses a chance to unsettle if he can.

Imo, the more likely worst-case scenario, if that's at all literate, is that we lose Lennon this summer and Berby the summer after - one way or the other (us or someone else) both those two are worth too much as Champions League assets to be messing around on the fringes of the UEFA.

So, for me, Lennon is the one we need to watch this summer . . .

tbh i was disappointed with the season. we were favourites to secure 5th at the start of the season, and that was trickier than I had hoped considering the plaudits won this season.

tho i understand that we played alot of games, but i'm not sure i undrstand what that means.

i feel that we've got to build on this season, and soon, or the club won't ever consistently challenge again. not sure why i think this.

i don't know much about football, so not sure if to believe what you say.

but, i see him as a risk at a huge price. we can only pray that jol knows what he's doing tbh. such is life.

Yus, looks like the money part has been agreeed on both Bale and Auxerre central defender Younes Kaboul. Just the medical for Bale today and . . . don't know when for Kaboul, presume today or tomorrow.

. . . almost a week ago  What's the problem, buffering :D

Imo, Bale is a small risk at £5 mill up front, but it's exactly the kind of deal we need to do several times over in this particular window - this is the big push now. Delays on this Kaboul character and no one seems to know why . . .

Fwiw, the deadline for renewal of season tickets was last Friday and . . . I didn't. Taking a break, distractions, etc. Shame but there we are . . .

Feck me, a Tottenham thread! Well played

07-08 3rd & UEFA Cup winners, Champions & Champions League winners 08-09. It's all falling into place...

Gaz Bale already in, Darren Bent & Morten Pederson to come. 'Tis good to be a Lilywhite!!!
