Sprouts are not just for Xmas..

Since I'm on a diet, this year's sprouts have to stand on their own - no spuds and chutney. Perhaps sometimes I will allow myself a few canned chestnuts.

The "Abacus" are going down well so far and have made eating my runner beans almost a chore.

Tonight's tea consists of
several sliced carrots,
500g of sprouts
as many mushrooms as I can fit in the bowl
Veggie and lentil soup
Milled flaxseed
tahini
perhaps a little Dijon mustard.

On another thread, I was advised that eating 500g of cruciferous vegetables every day was harmful to my thyroid ...

LD50 for sprouts :D

Cruciferous Vegetables, Isothiocyanates and Indoles

Experiment done with the subjects eating a piddly 150 grammes per day LOL

---------------------

I read elsewhere that an agreed limit is 10 cups or 2.5 litres of raw cruciferous veggies with no pre-existing thyroid condition.

Are Raw Cruciferous Vegetables a Threat to Your Thyroid Gland? - Healthy on Raw

It's reminded me to actively add iodine (sea vegetables) to my diet.
Perhaps just a daily sprinkle.
Apparently you can get iodine poisoning from excessive kelp consumption.

Also reminds me of the need to always add mustard when I cook sprouts to restore damage done by cooking and to get the full health benefits.

For the record I will be eating half a kilo of sprouts each day until spring and am now looking forward to buying sprouts on the stalk.

LD50 is the dose that would kill 50% of the population given that dose. It says nothing for how harmful it is to your thyroid. In fact, you can have thyroid problems and live and long and happy life.

I was being sarcaaaaarstic ...

It's what I googled.

My boss at work takes thyroxine.

Maybe one day I'll ask her if she grows sprouts on her allotment.
