Are the non-green bits of green tinged potatoes dangerous, or does the bad stuff only lurk in the green areas?

Sometimes if my tatties are starting to go a little green I give them a really good peeling to remove any hint of green, then eat them. Is that bad?

Oh, and sprouting potatoes - I just remove the sprouts and eat.

Try searching the various Plant Health Orders from 1993-2006 then. There are a whole range of restrictions on the use & import of uncertified tatties amongst other things.

certification relates to viruses though iirc. that's why you need new certified seed tatties each year, usually micropropped to ensure freedom from viral infection. seed tatties can carry phytophthora spores (blight) but they're dipped in fungicide to deal with this.

the greenness contains alkaloids or something that can KILL you  (I may be exaggerating) but if you peel it all off they're ok to eat :)

e2a: the alkaloid is solanine, just googled it. solanine as in solanaceae, the family they belong to along with dealy nightshade and tomatoes

Bight spreads - Introduce it & who know
how far it could go.

Which is why the laws against it are so strict. :p

Blight's already here, has been for YEARS. The problem is that it can develop resistance to fungicides and spreads easily, hence an outbreak should be controlled
