Spotify: awesome little music app thingy, free !

Only just got round to setting this baby up and liking it so far.
Not the most diverse collection of songs but was surprised to see some bands on their.
Well worth having if you need to here a song for some reason and want better sound than youtube or other such sites.

you can end up finding some really odd obscure stuff on there

here is a song of an odd very lofi rap album called Loose Change by V.A.R.I.O.U.S.(k-nine) from 2003

it has zero plays on last.fm

or how about this old 70s folky song

Multinational Corporation Man by Bill Horowitz

not great discoveries, but interesting enough for a listen

last.fm doesn't have enough full tracks on it does it?
so if someone in your neighbourhood listens to a certain artist you are likely to only hear
one of the few tracks by that artist that are not 30second samples, or have I got that wrong?

Is it really any better than Last FM?

Is there any incentive for me to switch?

not if you are just interested in the radio function.
but if you want to listen to whole albums, then yeah
its better for that.

I use both,
I also find that last fm can be quite clunky and slow to
stream tracks whereas spotify is more responsive

Seems absolutely brilliant.

The ads are nothing to the commercial radio stations that claim they appeal to those with an 'alternative' taste in music.
We had over an hour with just one 10sec advert.

Hopefully it will be pulled for one reason or another

Have also found some obscure folk stuff not be found anywhere else :)
*by that I mean any free listen thingy* ;)

Just trying this today. Very good so far, lots of french hip-hop at the moment for some reason! The ad I had earlier wasn't very intrusive either, certainly better than some crappy radio DJ wittering on.

Had a quick play with this, works nicely with wine, but I'm not sure why it's better than last.fm, the main thing I love about last.fm is that the service can be used with tons of different programs. I use it with Rhythmbox, MediaPortal, winamp and even on my phone. Spotify only has one program that I can see.

Loads the tracks really quick though and the interface is quite nice.

Just got into this...

Was lost when Pandora left us... Now I can start looking for music I havent heard by myself again, instead of relying on radio or tv . Yey!

FYI:

Spotify security notice
March 4, 2009

Last week we were alerted to a group that managed to compromise our protocols. After investigating we concluded that this group had gained access to information that could allow testing of a very large number of passwords, possibly finding the right one. The information was exposed due to a bug that we discovered and fixed on December 19th, 2008. Until last week we were unaware that anyone had had access to our protocols to exploit it.

Along with passwords, registration information such as your email address, birth date, gender, postal code and billing receipt details were potentially exposed. Credit card numbers are not stored by us and were not at risk. All payment data is handled by a secure 3rd party provider.

If you have an account that was created on or before December 19th, 2008, we strongly suggest that you change your password and strongly encourage you to change your passwords for any other services where you use the same password. [continues]

I have got it, its pretty decent when you want to listen to less obscure stuff and can't be bothered to download stuff. Hopefully the library will greatly expand which then I could even justify paying a subscription.

Crispy is late to the party...

It's pretty good. Listened to to 2 albums and only had one advert, which was easily muted. Impossible to tell if the catalogue is bigger or smaller than last.fm, but the interface is miles better. I'll keep it installed, because it'll be useful for those 'ooh could you put that track on?' moments.

Interface is the winner for me too.
It is surprisingly good and the adverts are unobtrusive.

Regarding the hacking is there anywhere that has not been now?
Gary McKinnon (Solo) nicked into the Pentagon servers a few years ago, but there is no no mention of the Pentagon staff music taste?

We enjoyed a great drunken "guess the intro" game last night thanks to Spotify. It really is as fast as having the files on your own PC.

ok, I'm gonna nominate this as the best thing there has ever been on the internet ever.

I'm listening to so much more music now than I used to.

Got given an invite last week. BUt they won't allow me to connect from here. I will have to connect via a proxy if i really want to see it work. So meh.

Hmm. The adverts are becoming more frequent now and very, very long. I've just had to put up with three minutes of sticky pop shite from 'Melody Gardot'.

Well, I would have if the 'mute' button wasn't so handy.

Seems incredibly slow for me. Everything takes ages to buffer. I think it's time my neighbour upgraded their internet connection, the BASTARDS

Doesn't look half as nice as last.fm either.

Really? It's just about instant here. The ads are really getting on my nerves now.
