Hmm. On the one hand, you have the amber nectar that has inspired poetry, art and a whole tasting and tourism industry. And on the other hand, you have rum. RUM. I can't believe that this is even open to debate.

Good whisky is the best thing, you can talk for hours, not feel drunk and not have a hangover the next day, but it has to be the good stuff.

You'll note that all the cool people are saying rum

Whisky: fusty old country club types, inane youth trying to appear 'rawk' hard (bourbon), anglophile/Scottishphile (??) tourist types seeking authentic 'peaty' tastes.
Gin: Polite dinner party circuit.
Vodka: Alcohol for people who don't like the taste of alcohol. And/or get drunk quick juice for Russians
Rum: Spirit of the people, drunk like beer in the tropics, yet with distillers capable of matching the best of the old world. Undervalued for years.

;)

but that's why rum's the best - good, honest, down to earth, BOOZE. Decent flavour, good whack of alcohol, no poncing around....

And anyone who thinks that rum hasn't inspired poetry, art and decent music in its native tropical lands is fooling themselves. And for its size that region leaves a massive cultural imprint globally, and not mainly in a kilt-wearing heritage way either

;)

I love whiskey, rum, vodka and gin, all in equal measures.

For the poll though I'll vote whiskey (either bourbon or Tennessee) as that's what I usually buy for home consumption :)

I couldn't give a flying fuck if rum had inspired the cistine chapel, it's still foul stuff.

Gin or vodka for me, can't decide between the two.

Your palate may mature one sonny. Until then continue on the taste-lacking vodkas and botanically-enhanced perfumed aromas of gin.

I think I should like whisky, but often the earthiness I find a little offputting. Rum just feels a little more lively.

Vodka I'll drink if I'm having a quick drinking session, lubrication and little more. Shooting vodkas are nice enough, but they don't leave much impression really - that said, I think I ranked up most of my overdraft in the days of old Babushka. Everything from creme egg to mars bar and rhubarb and custard vodka shots. Mmm,
