I don't think Spike ever wanted to win popularity contests especially in Hollywood and that is one of his saving graces. He is important because he portrays issues that no one else will talk about as well as making great films. For that reason he will always take criticism from mainstream Hollywood, the media and in the past certain prominent African-Americans.
Instead of focussing on the criticism and negative rumours it's better to look at his record and role in boosting the careers of up and coming or underrated actors eg Laurence Fishburne, Samuel L. Jackson, John Turturro, Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Mekhi Phifer, Halle Berry I could go on but you get the picture. He did the same for new Black filmmakers who he saw as struggling to get work they needed as many were not unionized and struck deals with the unions to do so. He also continues to take on large numbers of interns from NYU, his old school and makes sure they have their names on the credits. There are a shit load of people out there who owe their careers to Spike Lee and it's disgraceful that his actions not his words go unrecognized.
One of the most important and ignored aspects of his career though is that he created a white audience for films dealing with African-American issues and/or starring African-Americans both in the States and overseas and Hollywood sat up and took notice.
