Any good? Worth a download?

Her sales have apparently been totally unaffected by winning the mercury, which is unusual. Is this because she's actually quite shit?

Who said anything about 'buying'? ;)

I've just listened to one track. It's fucking dire. How did she win the mercury? Weirdness.

Have you got a link to this???

This is the only reference I can find online to it.

Debelle sales don't ring

Speech Debelle's victory at the Mercury Prize has had little effect on her album Speech Therapy's sales.

On Wednesday, the day after the event was shown live on BBC2, her album sold an extra 970 copies - only enough to reach No 83 in the midweek chart.

Florence And The Machine, La Roux and Friendly Fires' sales have all dropped by 20% this week, with Bat For Lashes the highest climber, up 55 to No 54.

970 copies

Just goes to show what a load of nonsense the Mercury Award is these days.

It's supposed to be the ultimate marketing coup for labels.

She was probably seen as the token "urban music" winner every award usually featuring rock or alternative-ish music has. Besides, it would be more interesting to see if the leecher to seed ratio on Piratebay or what.cd increased the day after.

I found her music to be completely bland (even if it's not my cup of tea) and while she surely seems a lovely person instead of the posing "indie" wankers that often feature there, it's the music that should be judged.

She wasn't even listed on PB or Demonoid.

My what.cd account got shut down :(

I watched her win the prize and what made my heart warm was not her win, but the joy on the Big Dada staff who couldnt believe they had won. Good on them - they work hard pushing underground music and they deserve a pat on the back. I dont know anyone at Big Dada, but you can tell the kind of bunch they are by the music they release, so good luck to them. I chalked it up as one for us, even though I thought Speech wasnt all that.

Just read that Speech has decided to dump Big Dada because she felt she didnt sell enough records! Ha ha ha - total obscurity beckons, unless someone at whats left of the majors decides to reinvent her doing a duet with robbie williams. At least Big Dada gave her the time of day. Id say something a bit nastier about Speech, but shes young and naive, so i'll leave it. Anyway, Big Dada are probably best rid of her.

Speech Debelle was reportedly booed by fans of Take That last night after she attempted to rap the band's 1993 hit 'Pray'.

The Mercury Prize winner was jeered off stage during the London launch of the group's new video game SingStar.

Debelle, real name Corynne Elliot, is said to have upset the 500-strong audience with her cover and when sections of the crowd began to boo, she stated: "I'm a rapper. I don't do Take S**t."

Her reaction prompted host James Corden to respond, saying: "That was s**t, anyone can rap."

The actor then launched into his own rap, according to The AP.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Debelle plans to quit her record label over poor sales of her debut album.

The record lable thing is weird...she claims they didn't have enough copies in stores to take advantage of her winning. Er....ever heard of iTunes? She increasingly cvomes across as a total arse. Don't like Take That? Don't whore yourself out at the launch of a branded karaoke game then.

AFAIK, Ninja Tune are above all, very supportive of their acts. She didn't take advantage because most people I've heard talking about her did not consider the record really that good.
Good luck on trying out for a major with a prize awarded by the industry and about 58 records sold. I'm pretty sure they'll give her millions for promotion and complete control over her music :)

Sounds like the label were just being cautious. I'd be well miffed if I was on Big Dadda, and they pissed away thousands pressing up a tonne of Speech Debelle albums just in case she won the mercury.

In any case - as you point out, there is iTunes, and whats the turnaround on a run of CDs these days? Can't be long.
