Like this, but in bib overalls?

Jesus, who did he steal those glasses from, Dierdre Fucking Barlow?

No, no. When I said big and clunky, I really did mean the Ari Onnasis/Ray Charles look: wide arms and thick frames, but with much smaller lenses than Charles Nelson Riley's in that picture.

Contrary to what appears to be popular opinion, I'm quite butch, all things considered.

No latte-sipping, Elton-John-glasses queen would embark on a middle-age career of dirt farming, ffs. For one thing, it's absolute HELL on a boy's manicure.

Hrumph!

No, what I mean is that you can get lenses that aren't thick even if you have a strong prescription. Coke bottle glasses are no longer necessary if you spend a little extra.

Well, I guess thickess is relative. I pay to have my lenses "ultra thin" or whatever it's called, but they still protrude from the side of the frame. They're still about 1/2" thick at the edges.

I have to get some glasses soon............

haven't had my eyes tested for a good 15 years and they are beginning to deteriorate badly (have to hold things away from my face to see them)......

it's affecting my reading.....which is a big :(

They mean a LOT extra! And even then, the frame types are restricted. For stronger prescriptions, that is. Nothing to do wiht you right now.

For you, the world's your oyster, but I'd bet that you could bear thicker, darker frames than others could. You have red hair and a strong jawline, and there is still a trend for geek chic. Tortoiseshell horn-rimmed glasses would probably look great on you. There aren't many people you could say that for!

Also, there are lots and lots of good deals online for your prescription - Google for them, or search on here for recommendations.

For all those slating Specsavers, I'm currently travelling through each ring of hell with Vision Express. They are currently ordering the fifth, yes FIFTH, set of lenses for my glasses because they keep fucking them up. For my trouble they are going to give me a free pair and fit them with my incredibly complex and expensive thin, slim varifocal lenses.

But if one more person says to me "you should have gone to Specsavers" I'm going to track them down and shit in their mouths.

I don't like Specsavers - they freaked me out by saying I had growths on my eyeballs and I should go to the eye hospital straight away to get them checked out. When I went to my normal contact lens optician he said they were talking nonsense and there was nothing on there. I've had several eye tests since and none of them have ever mentioned these so called growths.

Nobody fucking listens to me.

DAVID CLULOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jebus

I recently started wearing glasses again after 30 years of contact lenses. The optician I went to took photos of me in different frames, so that we could compare them all and decide which was best for my shape of face, bearing in mind that I am very short sighted, so they have to be the right size to deal with the thick lenses.

But there is a huge element of taste and fashion to glasses, which is only really noticeable now that we have old telly to watch, and can see what glasses used to be like :)

A little extra? It probably depends how short sighted you are. The lenses in my glasses now cost several hundred pounds, and they are not even the most expensive ones.
