Spain v England

see this is the thing. england are one of the top 12 - 15 teams in the world. we are not one of the top 5. we should be beaten by spain, we will look good against teams below us but when you play against as good a midfield 3 as spain have you will get found out, not have great possession and with no rooney get no link between attack and midfield.

i dont think until we as a team / press / nation start thinking differently about how good we should be, where we deserve to be then we will always over expect and under deliver.

Nobody wants the ball, I thought beckham should have started because he is skillful and can pass. there was nobody else with that subtlely tonight, and to be honest, the front two weren't good enough, or even their replacements. As you say we are top 10-15, ok I think we can be better in future, and quite honestly Spain are number 1 and I enjoyed watching them, it should be a good lesson to us and I reckon for someone as smart as Capaello it will be.

Iniesta and xavi prooved just how danm good they are. Both in the top 5 midfielders around at the moment i reckon. They didn't let any body play in the centre and thier passing and movement was amazing all night.

Downing needs shooting, he really isn't up to the required level. Once Joe cole is fit again he never need be mentioned.

Thought wright-phillips did quite well seemed willing to run at people and he enjoyed it when beckham was on the pitch as well.

Jagielka did himself no favours and thought Glenn Johnson had a good game.

Everyone else was very annonomous.

Spain were very good though. Despite not creating that many chances.

There weren't great, no. But they were playing arguably the world's best team.

And of course it's fair to criticise them... it'd the odd geek's glee in evidence on u75 England threads that erk me.

Agreed, they were playing the best team in the world, and to my mind, probably the best winners of any major tournament in quite some time (definitely better than italy in 2006, without any doubt better than greece in 2004, definitely better than brazil in 2002, waaaay better than the really overrated france side which won in 2000/98, and so on), they had half the team out injured (whereas spain had more or less a full strength side out) and we made a few chances, spain had two and took them.

I get sick of all this one way or the other extremism.

England are still building. This is a good learning experience for them.

Thank god it came now, and not in the semi final next year.

The current generation of English footballers will win nothing. They aren't good enough.

I await the next crop, you never know, but the unfortunate issue is that due to the Prem being what it is, they well might be delving with increasing regularity into the Championship for players. 1990 was our best chance so far.

Nah, we beat a very fancied croatia side 4-1 in croatia, we beat germany 2-1 in germany. Spain had their first XI out, we had a half-baked XI out, in a friendly, and it was nowhere near as bad as some other friendlies I can think of...

Capello is doing a fucking good job...

Fuck me that Spanish midfield are good.

Except Senna, he kept falling over like a big fairy, essentially just admitting he can't turn or pass his way out of trouble like the utterly superb Iniesta and Xavi.

Came on in spain against the world's best team, and nearly scored, with 10 minutes to go, in his first ever go.

What do you fucking expect?

He showed quite immense composure given the circumstances, I thought.

Nearly scored, what an achievement! He'll get player of the month for that. Last week, I nearly got into the England squad. Where's my 72 virgins?

David James nearly saves it:

that's why it doesn't count.

I don't know why everyone is moaning/gloating about England getting beat by the current European Champions, especially when they put out a team aimed more at giving Capello a chance to look at different players than at beating Spain. The amount of whingin miserable gimps and gloaters out to shit all over the English team (and english football in general) in order to present themselves as more intelligent, knowing, and cosmopolitan has now reached a critical mass over the stereotypical jingoistic white van driving muppets who they are so desperate to distance themselves from and is if anything more annoying.

I completely concur.

It wasn't that long ago that England were being similarly outclassed by teams like Greece and Macedonia.

IMO this Spain team is one of the best teams I've ever seen, internationally speaking at any rate.

My god, revol. You said it a million times better than I could have. Nice one
