Southampton

Oooh, I wonder if I've ever seen you there? :hmm:
I was there at the weekend - saw Cantaloop, who were average for that place but still pretty good. Kolebka's another good venue!

If you drive a car, you've more likely seen me nearly crashing into you on my bike

I live in Southampton. It's perfectly alright - just there's next to nothing to do in winter. There are some redeeming factors like a handful of excellent bars & venues - Soul Cellar has had some of the best live bands I've seen in the UK.

What's that "quirky" student-y pub over the road from the ferry terminal?

I don't drive, I can occasionally be seen going to university on my bike too though :hmm:

Haven't been there for a while but I think it's my favourite place to go out in the city centre. Never been to Kolebka though, where's that?

Kolebka (think I spelt that right) is on Bevois Valley Road. It's supposedly a Polish jazz bar, but it's not particularly. They have loads of live music on, no big names but it's usually very good. I think it's on Fridays & Sundays but I can never quite figure it out.

The Air Traffic Control place in Swanwick is in the middle of fucking nowhere. Had to go there for interviews last year. Still might get posted there.

Fareham might be an option no? Or Portsmouth?

If you let us know what you are looking for (uber stylish clubbing, studenty stuff, rural tranquility, etc) we might be able to help you better!

well, definitely not uber stylish clubbing! he's pretty much your regular indie kid. he also likes walking so access to the countryside is going to be a bonus. oh and h'll be moving down there with his wife. newlyweds!

He'll probably like it then. The only other places I'd say he should think about are Bournemouth (more music, but probably too far) and Winchester.

All of these are near the New Forest. Soton & Winch are near the South Downs Way, Test Valley Way and various other places. Bournemouth's near the Jurassic Coast.

disregarding my earlier write off of the city, from that description he'll probably enjoy it.

The pub opposite the ferry terminal is the platform. Its actually a very mixed bunch of people in there and they do ok pub food and have live jazz/folk/blues in tehre. Its got a lot more character than many pubs in Southampton. I like the soul cellar but haven't been there in ages because its always bloody shut. Never been in Kobleka and I can't remeber what it was before. Its just before the Dungeon (if that hell hole is still even going) and after clowns (best avoided if daddy doesn't own berkshire)

Nothing wrong with the Dungeon! Clowns is just full of the tosser end of student-dom (is it me or are students getting posher these days?). Portswood \ St Denys \ Inner Avenue \ lower Shirley pop you nicely into Indie-kid land, and theres the Hobbit as well. New Forest is a few miles away, for rambles 'n' stuff. You can drive, or just get the train.

Bournemouth is more clubby, theres a good indie club (Sound Circus), but you've slightly more a trek into town. Southampton --> NATS is about 15-20 mins... add an extra half hour from bournemouth.

I moved to Southampton 2 years ago this Xmas and the best thing about it is that it's near other, better stuff, (New Forest, beaches etc). The town itself's a bit rubbish tbh. Standard chain shops, some decent pubs, a couple of OK restaurants. Soul Cellar's good & the Guildhall has some decent bands on (tho most bigger acts seem to play Soton or Portsmouth or Bournemouth so you get kind of a 1 in 3 chance).

It's not a place you can get particularly enthusiastic about imo and perhaps should be renamed Southamptonmeh.
