South London butchers

Well nevermind, I think Winot got my point! :o :( :)

Yes of course I understand the downside of cards for all businesses. Ultimately it's up to the owner of the business to decide whether the potential upside outweighs the obvious downsides. Joe at the Portuguese deli on Atlantic Rd held out for years against cards but finally decided to take them and I don't think has regretted it (certainly my usual spend in there has risen from £10-20 to £20-30 as a result).

Credit card transactions take up added counter time and cost the butcher more.

Actually they are quicker if you've got a decent machine. Another upside is that with less cash on the premises small businesses don't need to worry so much about theft.

I'd be less against cash if it were easier to get it out in Brixton, particularly at the weekends.

Anyway, horses for courses innit? There are more important things to get worked up about (like the lack of decent butchers in Brixton).

Have you ever tried to get cash out in Herne Hill at the weekends. It's nigh on impossible. :(

Eh? Walk to Lloyds or any of the pubs with cashpoints and it seems fairly quick to me.

That said, I've just remembered that Lloyds has closed down after the last robbery, so perhaps I haven't been down that recently...

They run out of cash though or are out of order.

This is true. It happens a lot that both cash machines are out of order at the weekend. Even worse when Sainsburys aren't giving cashback.

The last time I tried to use the Lloyds cash point (which was working despite the fact the branch had closed) someone had thrown up over it the night before.

Yup. Can't remember the last time I was able to get cash out in Herne Hill at the weekend. Luckily I'm a regular at Louise Taylor Flowers (which is ace, btw) and she gives me cashback. :D

I was defending you!! :D:D

My lovely butcher in Loughborough Junction is closing down at the end of March because he's retiring. :(

I refuse to buy meat from a supermarket, so I need to find an alternative. My nearest is Walters in Herne Hill, but I've never been overly impressed by them. I don't want to use Moens because I think it's overpriced.

So it's either a trek to the one in East Dulwich, or Doves in Battersea, as far as I can see. Any thoughts, people?

It is sad that the retirement has been brought forward because closure of the adjacent Post Office has reduced footfall and trade. The Oval Farmers Market 10-3 on a Saturday has a number of meat traders - Mrs W hasn't bought from any because we always call at Philips first before getting our veggies at the market

Went to Dove's today and got some very expensive lamb chops and some reasonably priced sausages. The chops better be worth it! tarranau - what's Moxon's and Mash & Son, and while we're at it, does anyone know where I can buy fresh broad beans?

Don't think it's the right time of year for those - they are a spring/summer vegetable afaik.

Don't know about Moxon's but Mash & Son is the fishmongers under the arches on Atlantic Road opposite Argos. They're excellent and really helpful with whatever you want :)

Moxons is Clapham South really, so it's best to hit it on the way back if you're biking home. Great fishmongers, more reliably stocked than the nearby, helpful Mash.

Oh them - I use them all the time - lovely fellas

Ah, a fishmonger's - cheers

Lamb is always bleeding expensive, but fingers crossed that you'll enjoy the difference. If ever you go there and fancy a change ask about the salted pork and pork belly - not found better than their cuts anywhere else, ever.

Sausages are decent in there, generally mighty meaty, too tight and meaty if anything.

Not sure if you'll get fresh broad beans at this time of year, certainly not decent ones at a reasonable cost. Brixton market's pretty good for them when they're in season - end of the summer (I think) and you'll pick up a whopping bag for a pahnd

I saw they do oxtail in there too - gonna try some of that next week

What sort of thing is good to make with salted pork and pork belly? I rarely cook pork.

Maybe too far for some to want to go, but has anyone tried the New Covent Market on a sunday? There's a fab meat stall there. 3 lamb joints for £5. And any other meat you could want really cheap. Good quality meat too. Plus the market is brill for other things. It's really big with a mixture of market and boot sale type stalls. It's at the end of the p5 nine elms bus route. Just a 5 min walk from there. Well worth a visit.

To be fair, I rarely get past eating salt pork plain - it's a beautifully moist cut, full of flavour - a couple of slices are great with a roast chicken for example. Apparently it's very good with beans, lentils and other pulses.

Pork belly's just fantastic frankly, a kind of luxury pork crackling if you get it right. Try oriental style roast/bbq meat dishes, or simply with fennel seeds for a more Italian feel. Plenty of recipes, of all varieties, on the BBC website.

Can those things go together? Good Quality and Cheap Meat?

Oh they certainly can. Believe me. Every time I go there I fill my freezer. Never been disappointed yet. Feels like a proper butchers shop with all the meat laid out. The people that serve have the typical butchers hats and aprons. It's just a mobile butchers with a refrigerated van. Nothing dodgy at all. And always really busy.

I never said it was good quality because they have hats and aprons. I said it is good quality because it is. I was only trying to distinguish between a clean mobile butcher and some blokes off the street selling joints of meat from a stall. Not everything sold from markets is dodgy.
