South East London

Christ, it's only 12-15 from East Croydon and they go every 10 minutes or more.

That's a different line. Crystal Palace et al are on some slow lines and take twice the time that it does to get into town as it does from east Croydon.
West Croydon is slow as well.

I was thinking of moving to east Croydon specifically for that reason as the trains run well late and all.

no wai! lived in Charlton for a year or two as well and would never live in catfordshmatford :p

Neither would be on my list of places I would love to live but not due to roughness and more to do with a lack of atmosphere and there being anywhere worth going (pub wise etc)
Its a good bus journey or two to go for a quick pint after work iykwim?

Ever frequented The Bugle or The Swan?

The Bugle Horn used to be okay, a couple of years ago. My ex and I would drink in there two or three times a week, got to know some of the regulars and enjoyed it. Then for one reason and another we didn't go in for a while, and when we next did it had become a lot less nice. Nothing tangible - except that by then the smoking ban had come in - but the atmosphere had changed and it wasn't nearly as friendly.

The Swan could be a great pub, but every time I've been in there's either been a fight or my beer has had bits in it. So I avoid it.

However, if you think either of those are bad you shuld give the White Horse a go... :D

Yeah it's quite a good service from EC, you can get pretty fast trains to London Bridge (blackfriars and all that kings cross stuff too) and because it's fast to Clapham Junction 5-6 minutes it only took about 20 minutes to get to Waterloo in the morning (including platform waiting).

If you really really fuck up on the trains there is a fairly good night bus back to EC but when I have been mega late I have just got the morning trains from London Bridge or Victoria which start at about 2 or 3am or something anyway I think.

I had been for a few beers in the Bugle well before the smoking ban.
My Ex use to go there with his sunday league footy team after games.
I often use to stand at the bar for ages being totally ignored and a bloke would come up and be served straight away! :(

I have been in the White Horse ( I think it was that I was thinking of when I said The Swan), it wasn't somewhere I would rush back to.

The White Swan is in The Village, pretty much next to the Bugle Horn.

The White Horse is on Woolwich Road, scene of this hilarious incident when I first moved down here...

Yeah, they've got that big cat!

Yeah! And it's very near to Lewisham that has a brilliant cheap market and loads of shops and cheap restaurants and within walking distance of Greenwich and Blackheath and has an overground train station & the DLR.

Lewisham might be better than Catford :hmm:

Ah ok it was the Swan, I have not been in the White Horse.

My sister use to drink in The Coach and Horses by the level crossing just down (and slightly around the lower road) from Charlton station.

Hideous pub that has now closed. Full of borderline (maybe full blown) neo-nazi types and Freemasons.

Oh and the story is only not so funny as its all too common in these type of pubs.

Still kinda funny though ;)

I don't know what happened to the Coach and Horses. It was bought by the same people who own the Royal Oak, just the other side of the railway line. They gave it a refurb, reopened it with a fair bit of publicity and then it very suddenly shut down again. It's all boarded up and forlorn now. The Royal Oak is for sale too, as is The White Swan. With some of the old East Greenwich pubs vanishing too, it's a rather sad sign of the times. Okay, so many of them weren't pubs I'd choose to drink in, but it's a shame they're gone all the same.

I know what you mean about the knucklehead contingent in there, though. Tbh a lot of Charlton pubs give that impression, and one reason I used to like the Bugle Horn was that it usually didn't.

Hello,

I'm looking to move to South East London in the next couple of months but not too familiar with the area. Can anyone tell me which are the decent, safe areas and which areas to avoid? The places I'm looking at are Sydenham, Crystal Palace, Forest Hill, Gipsy Hill, Catford, Norwood and Blackheath...

Thanks

Sydenham: Now a bit over priced compared to surrounding areas and imho a bit soulless

Crystal Palace: Prices have shot up. Getting a bit Cla'am, and transport links aren't the best, but I do really like Palace. I could settle there.

Forest Hill: Nice enough!

Gipsy Hill: Like Palace really.

Catford: Noooo

Norwood: West - fine. Upper - too remote. South... well, I bought a house here 6 months ago and I really like it. Not remotely trendy, but has a decent enough little high st and it's pretty much the cheapest bit of London that you'd want to live in. Nice friendly little place. Its big, big plus is it's transport links. 10 mins to London Bridge, 4 mins to East Croydon. There's a direct link to Victoria (I get it to work every day) but it does take ages (35 mins). Direct trains and buses to Palace for the park, the restaurants, the nightlife. Direct buses to Brixton, Herne Hill, East Dulwich, Peckam, etc.

Blackheath: Over priced, a bit poncey, only goes into London Bridge but it is a nice enough place.

If you're looking to settle for a while or buy, then I'd recommend South Norwood. Cheap as fuck, great transport links, friendly little place. If you're looking to rent and are still young and carefree, then go somewhere a bit posher.

Great! Thanks for all the recommendations. I've looked at south norwood and it's very reasonable so maybe thats my best bet...

Where will you be working and where do your mates live? Make sure you can get to both easily!

Also, there are good bits and bad bits of South Norwood. North of the station is generally a bit more well to do, but there are some ok bits south of the station. We're about 3 mins walk south of the station and it's fine - nice Victorian/Edwardian housing stock.

One of the good things about South Norwood is that the speedy trains from L.Bridge usually have Norwood Junction as the first stop (or last, depending on whether you're inbound or outbound). Not the case from Victoria though, sadly.

I heard it was fine here till you moved in, but now............

we still haven't met up for that drink have we? :o

What's Norwood like for night buses?

I've come to think that connections are everything, especially late at night. There's nothing worse than freezing your arse off at 3am in the pouring rain, waiting for a bus that only runs every half hour or so.

If I stay in London after April I'll be moving out of Charlton, but wherever I go I shall be trying to keep the big advantage I have here - two 24-hour bus routes out of central London within a few minutes' walk from home.

Not the Royal Oak down from The Standard?

That was bought by the bloke that owns The Prince Albert on Royal Hill in Greenwich.
I use to frequent The Albert far too much (nearly every evening) last year and the year or so before.
Top landlord that use to put on all kinds of stuff for my colleagues and me.
He bought the Royal Oak (that I am thinking of) when the smoking ban came in as The Albert was too small to make a smoking area (tiny pavement out side) and it was a regulars kinda pub that nearly all smoked!

Charlton and Greenwich are good for night buses when a lot (but not all) of SE London is rubbish!

No, the one on Charlton Lane, just the other side of the level crossing from Woolwich Road.

Sorry I am a bit pissed and generally quite confused.

I don't live in Charlton but know it well, can't think of where you mean though.

Not Charlton Church Lane that has the station on it as I walk down that every day and surely have not missed the pub? :hmm:

Ah sorry yes I know Charlton Lane now, its the one with the level crossing, just like you just said.... sorry :(

Charlton Lane, Charlton Church Lane, Charlton Way, Charlton Road, Charlton Park Road ... all within half a mile or so of each other. I can see why you're confused! :D

The reason I am extra silly is that I work on one of them, walk down another every day, drive down another when I borrow my mums car, visit another at least once a month so should know better.

Although the lack of inventive road naming sums up my opinion of the area a little :p
